Three months of plaster samples every day like a job

With everything shut down, Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster bought a stack of MDF boards and went to the showroom every day from 8 to 4, applying plaster on boards.

A lot of material went in the bin: mixing, testing, finding what did not work. That is when he really understood the plaster, especially marmorino, his favourite and the most versatile.

The more you do it, the more you want to see what else you can create.

He planned a grand opening for his showroom and the city shut down that same day

Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster had the invitations out, the food and drinks ready and the local paper on the way. Then the mayor of Burlington declared a state of emergency and everything had to close.

Only family, friends and the photographer made it. They still celebrated the opening.

His take: it was a bump on the road, and there is always a silver lining.

Where do the new textures come from? The studio.

Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster tests materials on their own, layered and staggered, across three or four stations at once so he can compare. How long to dry, when to wax, when to seal, what if we stamp it or drag it.

And sometimes the data sheet says no, and he tries it anyway, just to see. Will it really crack? Will it delaminate? What could compensate?

On the wall, nothing is improvised.

Before Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster starts a job, he already knows how it will look: the veining, its direction, how wide, how thick, how smooth. Every job starts with a sample approved by the homeowner, designer, architect or builder.

Small adjustments happen on a big wall, but the finish stays true to the approved mock-up. His advice to everyone he trains: make a sample and get it approved.

Why Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster went all in on plaster.

Painting a custom home takes a crew. Plaster could be done with a small team, and back then only a handful of people were showing this kind of work online.

The bigger idea: offer a wall nobody else can make. A finished fireplace or accent wall gets you in the door, and the quality of that work speaks for the rest of the job.

From the brush to the trowel: the shift that changed everything.

Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster was already doing glazes and faux finishes when he moved into Italian decorative paints in 2017. Metallic paints applied with a trowel opened a new world: the trowel type, the material and the movement all change the effect.

His construction background still matters. A marmorino can forgive the wall. A metallic plaster needs a level five, because one speck of unsanded dust makes the trowel jump.

When did working with his hands become something he loved?

Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster kept painting on weekends for anyone who called, and kept teaching himself: new paint lines, new tools, the right brush and roller, never just the first thing on the shelf.

What hooked him was finishing. Start a wall, finish it, step back and say "that's done, what's next?"

There are almost as many people from his hometown living in Toronto as there are back in Italy.

Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster was born in Toronto after his parents tried their luck in Canada. His dad was in the trades too, a tile setter working in marble, porcelain and ceramic.

By the early 1970s his father had opened his own tile store in the city. The trade runs in the family.

Born in Canada, raised in Italy, back in Toronto at 17 with two days' notice.

His uncle offered him a flight, a place to stay and work. His dad's answer: "What are you waiting for?" Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster landed that Thursday and remembers being amazed by the lanes on the 401.

It never felt like starting over. At 17 he was continuing, straight into his uncle's painting business.

The man who put a trowel in Johnny's hand: Don Antonio.

Before him, Johnny of Spiver Canada was the one fetching tools and materials. Don Antonio was the first to say "here's the trowel, show me," and took the time to teach him how to use it. That is what it means to be lime burned.

He was a well respected builder in his community, and when Johnny left for Canada he told him there would always be work waiting if he came back.

At 14, Johnny of Spiver Canada was already on a job site in Italy.

He started as a laborer carrying mortar, blocks and bricks for an old school builder who took a house from the foundations all the way to the finished interior. That builder put a trowel in his hand. Johnny learned to plumb walls with mortar points, fill them with a lime plaster made with live lime, and pull it flat with a straight edge.

The lesson he still carries: the value of starting something and finishing it yourself.
