I had been present at one home birth earlier in 2020 and been post partum childcare support for 2 years prior to that. I had seen how necessary care outside of the medical industrial complex was and also saw how gendered this work still was. I saw how a dear friend shifted using they/them to she/her for a child after they saw genitals on an ultra sound. I saw how deeply the identity of a “Womban” was intertwined with pregancy and birth in a way that distanced me from the people around me, knowing that there are people who birth who aren’t women and there are women who cannot birth or don’t want to. I saw a gap in all of the birth support that was more queer of focus, care of center, that wasn’t connected to a binary that I, and my loved ones have experienced harm from. Doula means “slave woman” or “servant woman” in Greek. Even though there is a lot of transmutation around this language, the word is gendered in a way that I have been seeking to distance from specifically around birth practices. slide 3: on lined pawr the text reads: I was drawn to BADT’s program specifically because it covered a wide spectrum of care: pre natal, post partum, birth, miscarriage, and abortion. Informed by queer, Trans, Black, disabled, practioners coupled with a curriculum that supported gender expansive individuals in supporting gender expansive individuals. My intention for learning these skills was to support Trans parents or gender expansive parents specifically in centering a gender creative birthing experience with care, advocation, and a deep understanding of the disruption of the binary even just in me being present. Way back in the pre-pandemic INFERNO era, I invited a performer called The Uhuruverse to perform at one of our parties. I had been a huge fan of Uhuru’s work with the incredible band F U PAY US, and was amazed by Uhuru’s solo LPs and the powerful, political and sexually charged songs on his records. Getting Uhuru to NYC was not easy, but I was so pleased when he arrived and performed at our party. It was an amazing night I’ll never forget. Uhuru lives in a Black, trans house in New Orleans called Deeepspacecraft, which is in constant need of funds to help maintain upkeep, pay mortgage, and keep the artists and community members inside alive and thriving. Deeepspacecraft is owned & maintained by and serves Black and indigenous trans people, building power and support for artists and sex workers by providing a housing safety net for those who are actively experiencing emergencies due to systematic transphobia, anti-Blackness and discrimination. The @deeepspacecraft house also acts as transitional housing space as well as a creative sanctuary and provides private, safe, work space for Black trans people working in the creative arts and entertainment industry. The recent surge in energy costs have led to exorbitant bills for Deeepspacecraft, but the most pressing concern right now is the house’s air conditioning system. We’re all on day 1 of a major heat wave in the NYC area, and you only have to go outside to have an idea of how hot it is in New Orleans during the summer. Uhuru needs to raise 7K to pay for a complete overhaul of the Deeepspacecraft’s AC system, and they have already raised 2.5K via a GoFundMe campaign - LINK IN BIO. Since I first sent out a call for donations on Thursday, you have chipped in nearly 2K! But they still need 3K more! I am hoping you can help us raise those remaining funds. Whether you can give only $5, $25, $50 or more, everything helps to get Uhuru to his goal. In 2016 they directed the psychedelic film noir, “FIGHT IN HEELS,” a collaboration with the #SNATCHPOWER artist collective (founded by The Uhuruverse in 2014) and directed a follow up in 2018 titled “Channeling Calafia.” They’ve released two albums, “The Brightest Oddest Strangest Star U Ever Did Saw Up Close and Afar From Planet Earth to Mars and Beyond” and “Who Killed Kenisha?!” The Uhuruverse did their first immersive installation titled “Nightmare on Easy Street” in Folkestone, England critiquing the classism of fascism. In 2020, The Uhuruverse established The Deeepspacecraft (a Black disabled tgnc owned and operated sanctuary space) in New Orleans which has housed over 35 Black trans folks in need and/or for creative purposes.] Two images of Uhuru Moor. 【日本語は下】 On April 19th, I’ll be sharing my heart with @namnam_space, in the form of screening my short films Home, & The Quiet One, as well as performing a vocal number I’ve been working on for a bit of time. It’s titled “I Can”, and it honestly feels like the most vulnerable work I’ve done in a long time. In this piece I’m returning to my voice, stretching its limits, and expanding on its capabilities. I’m returning to the runs of the church and channeling rifts to show my sincerest commiseration to the parts of me that struggle to be seen. I’m excited for many reasons: Performing a new piece that has pushed me to a new type of expression, It’s my first solo show, I’m going to be in the company of amazing human beings, and I’ll be in a place I’ve wanted to travel to for some time now. I’m looking forward to connecting with everyone who can make it.
