Hillsborough is where the dive shop is located, so videos have all been from this area. Last night, Kev and I went to the windward (east) side of the island for dinner.

Seeing Windward in person and seeing the scars left by Hurricane Beryl (2024) is hard to put into words. Homes, boats, trees, and so much of what people built were destroyed in just hours.

But what is most touching is the strength of the people. They keep rebuilding, helping each other, and holding onto hope. You can still see Beryl’s destruction, but you can also feel the heart of Carriacou. While Kevin has been here, the new jetty was opened. Being state of the art, the people are very proud and excited about this huge move for the country.

When friends come, Pizza Me Heart is definitely on the list of places we will come eat! Best pizza ever!!!!

A brief glimpse into what a day on the island working looks like. Filling the tanks for the fishermen so they are ready in the morning, prepping for what Gayle and the volunteers will be doing with the coral nursery, teaching dive students and everything that goes into having a business.

There is something different every day that is for sure!#jenkevtravel #iowatocarriacou #carriacou #dayinthelife #diveshoplife

If you're wondering how your day would look like when you're volunteering with us in Carriacou, this is for you!

Big thanks to our lovely volunteer Elsa, who spent 4 weeks with us. She learned to dive and worked on Coral restoration and gardening on our nurseries.

My journey from Okoboji to Carriacou took me through Sioux Falls, DFW, Miami, and Grenada before finally landing on this beautiful little island. This trip was especially meaningful because I came to spend time with Kevin, dive here for the first time, learn the ins and outs of the dive shop and my role here, and to get a better feel for this island that is becoming our home someday. After all those miles, finally arriving in Carriacou felt a little surreal from our first trip, but has been worth it.

My first trip from Iowa to our new adventure in Carriacou is a quick but unforgettable visit—time to explore, learn more about the dive shop, and see Kevin. It is just a little taste of what’s ahead, but I know this isn’t goodbye. I’ll be back. Kevin will be back. Carriacou may be becoming a new home and a new chapter, but no matter where life takes me, Iowa will always hold a very special love in my heart. Some places become home, and some places become a part of who you are—I’ll always carry a little bit of Iowa with me wherever I go. See you all again soon. 🫶

What is Grenada known for? It is more than just diving, beautiful sunsets, sea breezes and all around beauty. First off, Grenada includes the mainland in addition to Carriacou (where the dive shop is located) and Petite Martinique.

Grenada is called the spice isle. They are the top global producer of nutmeg, mace, cloves, ginger and cinnamon. Nutmeg is on their national flag!

Carriacou is known as the isle of reefs. An underwater sculpture park is located just out from the dive shop. It was designed by environmental sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor. It shows 30 origami-style boat sculptures navigated by local schoolchildren symbolizing climate refugees.

Boat building is a huge part of the maritime heritage on Carriacou. Wooden workboats are made on the island in addition to other forms of boats. The dive shop has a boat for diving purposes that was built on the island.

Carnival occurs on the island as well. During this time, a Shakespeare Mas occurs. Grenada is a Commonwealth of the UK. Mas occurs strictly on Carriacou, and the residents are very passionate about their culture and roots. More on that later!

Finally, Carriacou is home to world famous Paradise Beach and Sandy Island. Paradise Beach hosts a beautiful sandy beach with stellar sunsets. Sandy Island is not far out from Carriacou. Many will go out to the island for the day, walking in the soft white sand.

While the islands are big compared to other Caribbean islands, there is so much to offer. The people are so friendly, and they want to experience a fun time and stories right along with you. We personally cannot wait to share this adventure, and hopefully see you all at one point or another!

Now that we have announced the plan, let’s get to know Carricaou and Grenada a little bit. Once a week or so, I will post a bit about the island or something related to it. Travel, food, the people, weather, what is there to do, how are we feeling about this and whatever other things people may want to know.

First and foremost: how do we get there and where exactly is it on the map? First, I used Minneapolis as the closest major airport to our area. If you are from another region, apply your location/closest airport to your equation. The major thing is this: get to Miami. From personal experience, bypass ANY layover at Ronald Regan or DFW (sorry Tess and Ben but IYKYK!) From Miami, it is a 3.5-4 hour flight. Once landing on mainland Grenada, a ferry or flight is available for transport to Carriacou. The ferry is approximately a 1.5 hour transport, while the flight is 15 minutes. One note to mention, due to the size of the plan, weight is limited for the plane.

If going by ferry, you can sit on the top deck and see the entire island of Grenada. It is truly stunning. You can also possibly see whales, dolphins or sea turtles pending the time of year.

If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! We would love to see you come visit someday. The country is beautiful, and the people are just amazing. More on that soon-I promise.

Here it is. The grand reveal.

Deefer Diving in Carriacou, West Indies (WI) as of today, September 1, 2026 is under new management. Kevin is remaining at the bank at this time.

The big question (or one of them): where is Carriacou?? Carriacou is located in the SE Caribbean, 125 miles north of Trinidad. It is a commonwealth of the United Kingdom, and is an island apart of the country of Grenada.

What does this all mean? It means a lot of things to a lot of people. Not only in Iowa, but also on the island. For Kevin, it means he is living out his dream of owning a dive shop in the Caribbean. We have already gotten to meet some amazing people from Carricaou, and cannot wait to meet more. Making connections with so many, and experiencing the island from those who are so passionate about their heritage.

As we make it through this transition time and figure everything out on what this new adventure brings to us, we will fill you in with more information on not only how life will change for us but also on what amazing things this dive shop has to offer.

Ever wondered how we monitor the health of our reefs and track the ocean’s top predators? 🦈 It all starts here on land!

Our amazing volunteers took a trip to the local fish market to collect fish scraps. Why? To prep the bait for our BRUVS (Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems)! 🎥

By recycling these scraps, we can safely attract and study apex predators like sharks and rays, gathering essential data to protect Carriacou's marine ecosystems.

This is what hands-on conservation training looks like—it’s not always glamorous, it smells pretty strong, but it’s incredibly rewarding!

Would you be ready to get your hands dirty for marine science?
