DJ Katch. An institutional legend.

A DJ. A producer. A B-Boy from way back. One of the earliest—and most enduring—practitioners of Australian hip-hop culture.

From Brisbane in the early '80s, Katch was figuring out turntablism when there was no YouTube, no DMC videos on demand and barely a scene to learn from. Just records, repetition and an obsession with getting better.

Four decades later, he's still at it.

His artefact: the white Technics 1200s he bought in 1986—thrown in cars, checked onto flights, dragged through four decades of Australian hip-hop, tagged by DJ Einstein...still working.

We talked DJing, Resin Dogs, Hydrofunk, vinyl, Serato, touring, the industry, and the moment he walked away from big festival money rather than keep playing music he didn't believe in.

But the story that really grabbed me was a session he almost didn't think twice about: cutting on a track he'd heard exactly once, with three passes in one take, that ended up on one of the biggest Australian rock records of the '90s.

Excerpt:

So he showed up to the session with a "shitty little Gemini Scratch Master mixer and a copy of Bionic Booger Breaks—a record full of martial arts fighting sounds, perfect for a track with "Kung Fu" in the name.

They played him the song once.

Once.

Then Katch laid the cuts.

"I did like three passes, all in one take," he explains. "I made it like a fight scene."

"I did my shit and left," he smiles.

He didn't think much of it—another session, another day. The idea of asking for acknowledgement or payment didn't even occur to him.

"Being a newbie in the industry, I didn't even think about credit or money," he laughs. "I didn't even know about that shit back then."

Then the record dropped and blew up.

The album—TU Plang—went double platinum. Won ARIAs. The single, 'Kong Foo Sing’. went platinum on its own.

And those scratches—laid in three passes without hearing the track first—were right in the middle of one of the biggest Australian rock records of the decade.

That's Katch.

Trust the instinct. Do the work.

I found this old tape I’d "accidentally" kept rolling on, while filming for the big screens at #Lividfestival with @5050films.

It was October 18, 2003 at the RNA Showgrounds, Brisbane, the 17th and final annual Livid music festival. One of the best festivals ever.

Right in the middle of Jurassic 5’s set, I was stoked when DJ Nu-Mark started cutting up a storm on, I think its a 1998 Neurosmith Music Block Player, kids toy.

I’ve always loved this moment, so it’s nice to finally share it. It’s also buried somewhere in a longer clip on YouTube. Look for Jurassic 5, Livid Festival Brisbane, 2003, browndog
