🎃 Knock knock, trick-or-treaters!

Did you know that in my city (St. Louis), trick-or-treaters have to earn their candy by telling a joke?! 👻

When I first moved to St. Louis, this tradition totally caught me off guard, but now it’s one of my favorite things about this spooky season! 🤪

There’s nothing cuter than little kids telling jokes they don’t understand or funnier than big kids dropping wildly inappropriate jokes (or terrible dad jokes). 😂 It’s Halloween gold!

Weekend beach trips.

My mom loves the warmth. She would often sneak out on the deck to catch some vitamin D and warm up. She could live without the AC in warm climate. Any chance we got, we spent at the pool side or at the beach. And even though the ocean breeze was rather strong on the days we happened to be there, she was taking it all in. She left on Monday and the home feels a little empty.

Maybe the “good stuff” isn’t ahead or behind us. Maybe it’s somewhere in between. Right in the midst of this moment, here and now.

I’ve been trying to work on my documentary photography lately. When I saw Michael sitting in a box and reading his brother’s book, I quickly grabbed my camera as if my life depended on it! This moment itself is pretty funny.

I think kids have a lot in common with cats - they love boxes, milk, and cuddles, and sometimes treat grown-ups like their maids. Did I forget any other similarities? 😂😂😂

“Tulisia”

That is what we call his lovey and it his most beloved possession. As soon as he comes home from preschool, he washes his hands and runs upstairs to be reunited with it. When I tidy up the house, I usually leave it hanging on the rails of the bed and he no longer asks for it. This is the new routine as he knows where to find it.

Also we recently lowered one side of the crib to make it a toddler bed. He used to sleep with us all this time, but we are making small steps before transitioning him to a big boy bed. Every evening we are both crammed in it and some nights I even fall asleep with him. But sometimes he asks to be by himself in his bed, and wants me to stay around on the rocking chair. It is working but boy these moments are bittersweet.

Do your children steal dogs’ beds? This one is in my bedroom and we often slept together. So one of them would stop here before hoping to bed. Also, it is used like a huge pillow to jump into.
Only recently we started staying in boys’ room until they fall asleep. I think it is time at ages 4 and 8. But they still end up in my bed tiptoeing in the middle of the night. And I love that too much not to allow it. Sad will be the morning when I realize this is not the case any more.

Years ago I “met” @deezer_roth on Instagram and when we realized we were a few hours apart, she got in her car and drove to my house on my birthday and we met in person for the first time. Years later we are still friends and I keep getting the honour of capturing her family. This season I took a break from family photos unless they were past clients and it allowed me to recover from cranky dad burn out. Next season I may take on family sessions again, but with what I’m going to call the Joe Clause: Show up and love on your family, or please hire someone else. Thank you @deezer_roth and your beautiful family for igniting my love for family photos again.
