POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Working in news, I often get to experience many firsts. This story was the first time I was able to highlight the voice of a deaf individual through an interpreted interview.

The report was intended to be rolled out weeks ago but ironically, a lack of available and affordable resources made it difficult to conduct an interview with someone using American Sign Language.

It wasn’t easy to pull together but I just got a mere glimpse of some of the barriers deaf and hard of hearing people face in their everyday lives.

I’m very proud of this piece. Thank you Azish and Andrea for sharing your stories, as well as the Ontario Association of Sign Language Interpreters for helping facilitate the interview that was a first of its kind for me.

Today marks the beginning of International Week of Deaf People, September 21–27. 💙

This year’s theme is “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights.”

It’s a week to celebrate Deaf people, Deaf culture and sign languages, while also recognizing the importance of accessibility, communication, inclusion and the right of Deaf people to fully participate in society.

These clips are from the Def Events & Beyond annual Community BBQ we attended back in July.

And there’s a little personal story behind why I’m sharing them.

English is my first language, and growing up in French Immersion means I’m also pretty comfortable in French. I can go into most spaces in Canada and understand what’s being communicated.

At this BBQ, we were the ones who needed the interpretation.

It was a small but VERY powerful reminder of what it feels like when communication isn’t automatically accessible, while knowing that my experience for a few hours is certainly not the same as living that reality every day.

One of my goals, when things settle down with my parents, is to start learning ASL because I want to keep learning how to make connections more accessible.

And speaking of Def Events & Beyond… 🩵
(the founder Andrea doesn't know I'm creating this post lol)

Their fundraising gala is happening this Sunday, and I really wish I could be there! If you can attend, support, donate, or simply learn more about what they’re doing, go check them out!

Andrea (@defeventsbeyond) grew up hard of hearing, in the hearing world. When she first came into contact with Deaf community and Deaf culture, she felt awkward, isolated, not sure she belonged there.

That one ASL class, the one she almost skipped in high school, turned out to be the language she needed when she lost the rest of her hearing in her twenties.

Andrea is Creative Director for DEF Events & Beyond and her full interview goes into how her Deaf identity took shape well into adulthood. It's part of the Growing Up Deaf Summit, a free online event for hearing parents of deaf/hard-of-hearing children running September 17 to 20. Watch 21 interviews with Deaf adults, parents and educators sharing what I wish I had known when I first found out my son was deaf.
