Last week, team member Becca attended the @culturality_project Living Lab with @appliedartsscotland. She says:

“The CULTURALITY Living Lab, held at the incredible @dellofabernethy, was an intense but hugely rewarding experience. In just 3 days, two teams developed a prototype co-design framework for makers and their collaborators and a visioning tool for rural communities.

“I was delighted to be asked to be part of the week as there is so much crossover between this project and @ruractive_eu which I lead for GrowBiz.”

Last week the AAS CULTURALITY Project Team facilitated our Living Lab @dellofabernethy. Over five days, two groups of collaborators created prototypes from two ideas tackling how to improve connections through craft in rural areas to engage with sustainable tourism.

After a huge amount of work the groups presented their ideas to a public gathering in the Dell’s tepee:

CULTURALITY is an EU Horizon research project exploring how creative & culinary industries in rural areas currently interact with tourism, & how they could in the future. Over four years, organisations &universities in Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Estonia, Romania & Slovenia are collaborating to generate data to support digital archives, & a virtual platform. At the same time, physical research events are being held to listen to the voices of the creative sector in rural areas: the idea being to create conversations & concepts to help design new tools & models of working & generate sustainable forms of income for creative practitioners.

@culturality_project is an international network of consortium partners, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, with the Scottish partners funded by @weareinnovateuk.

The time has come and 2027 dates are out! 👀 🫶🏻 We have been working away behind the scenes to finalise locations for next year and we are sooooo excited about the retreats we have planned!

In April we head the incredible RESTARIES in Suffolk, UK - for a 4 night Mother & Child Retreat at their epic farm stay. Kids will love the adorable furry friends on the farm - and complete with wild spa, stunning accommodation, yoga & creative workshops - Mamas will enjoy a blissful break as well 😌

We return to The White Isle again in May after our beautiful retreat in the North of the island this year. This time we land in the countryside a little closer to the hum of Dalt Vila, in a stunning collection of casitas curated perfectly for both adults & children. We talk a lot about balance at the equinoxes.

Those briefest of moments where light and dark are held in equal measure.

Just for a moment.

And yet, maintaining that same equilibrium within us at all times is a tall order in this world.

We are constantly moving.
Giving.
Receiving.
Doing.
Being.
Holding on.
Letting go.

So perhaps balance doesn’t have to mean perfection.

Perhaps it is simply noticing when we have moved too far in one direction.

When we’ve been giving more than receiving.
Doing more than being.
Saying yes when something in us is asking for no.
Holding on when something is ready to be released.
Pouring out when our own cup is asking to be filled.

And then, gently, finding our way back.

Back to ourselves.
Back to our centre.

Balance isn’t stillness.

It is movement, with awareness.

A continual returning. 🤎

The land holds centuries of hidden stories and they are just waiting to be shared🌲

We are genuinely sooooo excited to share this one! We’ve been chatting with Sarah from @strathspeystorywalks for a while now. The dream was to bring the incredibly rich and important stories that she so beautifully shares to the Abernethy Forest. And we are delighted to say that it's finally happening!!

From autumn firepit tales and winter evenings under the stars, every Tuesday evening Sarah will now be weaving together folklore, history, and starlit mythology, complete with a warm cup of seasonal foraged tea, for an unforgettable experience in the Highlands. ☕📜

My first time in the Cairngorms, and definitely not my last 🍄

Such a special few days immersed in this wild and beautiful landscape. Thoughtful, creative and grounding yoga with @yoga.ro each morning and evening in the tipi, practising around the fire. Hikes through ancient forests and across the hills with Ruari @instinct_guides, bike rides to Loch Garten for a breathtaking dip, and plenty of time simply being outside.

We came back each day to the warmth of @dellofabernethy and the most amazing food from @nourish_by_nicola.

Big skies, forests, mountains and lochs. Yoga, fires, delicious food and great company. There was something about the simplicity of these few days that felt very special.

The Cairngorms, I’ll be back.

Come and spend five days at The Dell immersed in good food, cheesemaking and the beautiful landscape of the Cairngorms.

I’ve designed this retreat around the way I love to cook and eat, making things from scratch, using good seasonal ingredients, sitting down for long lunches, sharing food with other people and taking the time to enjoy it.

We’ll make a variety of cheeses from scratch, from fresh cheeses, mozzarella and burrata to more traditional, longer-aged styles.

But this is about much more than cheesemaking. We’ll cook with what we make and explore delicious, unexpected ways to use the whole of the milk, from curds to whey.

Think rich tomato sugo, venison ragù bianco, polenta with wild mushrooms and buttermilk farmers cheese, whey sodas and focaccia made with whey, alongside mozzarella, burrata, stracciatella, butter, yoghurt and fresh cheeses.

There’ll be long lunches, seasonal suppers, forest walks, wild swims, time to explore the Cairngorms and evenings around the fire. Some days will be centred around cheesemaking and cooking; others will leave plenty of space to simply enjoy The Dell and take some time for yourself.

Spaces are intentionally limited to keep the experience small and intimate.
