My third AWP and I feel like I finally have a sense of how to navigate the chaos. Had so much fun seeing writer friends from near and far, meeting online friends IRL, and exploring more of Baltimore. Next time I definitely want to do a reading!

Let's talk #EcoPuppetry. This Autumn, I worked w/ a very special clay to create 16 #puppets for doctors across the country (for my Embodiment in Medicine work... a story for a future post.)

This #clay was gifted by @boozerreddirt.

She & I had many conversations over the last year about the #colonial imagination, as she worked on a beautiful exhibit about 2 local clays that surround the area of #Troy, NY for The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

We peeled back some of the layers of the colonial imagination, editing language and names in the exhibit, shifting the curatorial frame for a partial decolonial telling about this clay & region.

Then this weekend, @house_of_edgertor & i had the immense gift to visit the show, and the specific place where the clay was foraged from.

I felt the sloping ridges & edges of the banks of Glacial Lake Albany, traced the exposed walls where tiny clay particles had slowly floated down over at least 1,000 summer & winter waters & formed the memory of this lake vessel.

We sat on the road by these banks who belonged to this ancient glacial lake that no longer exists, whose descendent is the #Mahicannituk ["Hudson"] River.

The shape of these exposed glacial banks reminded me of the shapes of Staghorn Sumac branches, a plant I connected to deeply last autumn during my @split_rock_arts residency.

I was finally able to thank the Land, directly, to shift unconscious habits of taking from the earth.

We -- #soil scientists (that's Richard Shaw & his shadow walking and observing along the clay bank) professors, students, artists and visitors -- we voiced gratitude to this clay & this place, voiced why we are taking this clay & what purposes we will use it for, and I poured water over the wounds where the clay had been taken, and sprinkled sumac berries as salve.

The magnificent Staghorn #Sumac grows on disturbed soils & edges, a #healing plant so fitting for this place that carries such deep wounds.

For me, "eco-puppetry" begins first & foremost with knowing that the earth hears, feels & sees us.

Let us act accordingly. This action of gratitude & giving back is not mere metaphor.

Thank you for such a powerful weekend🙏
