What an intense feeling of finally sharing León & Lightfoot: Salle de Danse with our audience, and tonight a new cast takes the stage🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Congratulations on amazing reviews. But if something makes me even more proud , it’s to see the bonds, the lifting of each other - all possible because of the extraordinary León and Lightfoot. Sol and Paul -your choreography, humanity and your expectation, hand in hand. Our history - our love and silliness- brought by you and the incredible César Faria Fernandes, Mikaela Kelly, Roger Van Der Poel, Chloe Albaret, Jorge Nozal and Olivier Coeffard. And our very own Jahn Magnus, Kaloyan and Yoshifumi. Thank you for the music!! The one and only Ilya Demutsky. Matthew Rowe and the orchestra, Joey and Zelina, and the whole house behind the scenes – thank you! A premiere like this takes all of us. Not at least our technical crews and Unni&Anders. Music and Dance. What a combo. So very grateful to you all. 💫💫💫

We are only one month away from the opening night of the 2026 San Francisco Dance Film Festival and we are kicking it off with the US Premiere of “Nureyev”, the extraordinary story of an artist who not only transformed the world of ballet, but stood as a symbol of artistic freedom and individual self-determination.

Choreographed by Yuri Possokhov (San Francisco Ballet Choreographer in Residence) in collaboration with stage director Kirill Serebrennikov, with a score by composer Ilya Demutsky, the production blends ballet, opera, and drama into a sweeping homage to one of the 20th century’s greatest dancers.

The ballet premiered at Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre in 2017 to widespread acclaim, but was permanently removed from its repertoire in 2022 under Russia’s expanded “gay propaganda” law with particular attention given to the portrayal of the relationship between Nureyev (David Soares) and Erik Bruhn (Martin Ten Kortenaar) as seen in this excerpt.

The ballet was staged by Staatsballett Berlin in 2026, marking the first time Nureyev had been performed outside of Russia. This live performance capture brings that landmark production to the screen and audiences in San Francisco for the first time.
