From identifying anatomical landmarks to demonstrating muscle actions in an edentulous mandible, it's all about understanding the anatomy before capturing it. It might seem obvious, but spend time talking to your patients! Don’t just grab your compound, alginate or whatever material you use and jump straight into taking an impression. First, establish whether this is a case you can confidently tackle. There’s absolutely no shame in saying, “I’m sorry, but this case is beyond my skill set.” In fact, I think more dentists should be doing this! Bath Cohort 15! 🦷 Another sold-out course! Can we stop treating the denture try-in as just a chance to ask the patient if they're happy with how their teeth look? 👀 Because a patient can love their new smile, the bite can look great, and we can still be missing something important. How do they actually function with those teeth? Phonetics is one of those things that's so easy to overlook, particularly when we're focused on aesthetics, occlusion and getting everything ready for finish. But a few carefully chosen words can give us some really useful clinical information before we commit to the final prosthesis. And the best part? It takes less than a minute to incorporate into your try-in appointment. I've put together a little clinical cheat sheet of the sounds I find useful, what they can tell us and what to look out for. If I was asked what has been the biggest game changer in materials I have changed to over the years in practice, it would have to be @kulzergb alginoplast. When supported with @kemdentuk’s compound, greenstick and wax, it is simply unrivled when compared to many other alginates I have used over the last 23 years in practice. The detail is incredible and flows like no other alginate, and it isn’t expensive! Thanks @kulzerphil for supplying me and thanks @mike_gregory_dentures for introducing me to it. When doing a lot of removable pros cases having a great quality alginate is essential. 🫡
