Being a fan is cool
Inside Rejoice, Part 4: “All I Need Is A Rock (ft. Dent May)”

💗 Back in the day, openly admitting you were a fan of other bands wasn’t very cool… But we always name-dropped the artists we loved in interviews.

🎵 I discovered @dentmay ’s music through my brother Renaud, starting with Warm Blanket, which I only own on iTunes. Worst format ever, and yet it became a close companion.

😷 Around 2020-21, during lockdown, while working on Here With You, I asked Dent if he could mix or co-produce a few songs. He pointed me to Pat Jones at @honeymoonsuitela , and Pat ended up mixing most of the album.

🥂 Later, when Dent performed in Paris, we finally met IRL (I was the one screaming for “Born Too Late”). We agreed to do a collab, and I sent him a demo of “All I Need Is A Rock”, recorded entirely on a Yamaha PSR-36 (slide 4). I had in mind a transatlantic song with a bit of The The, some B-52s and a dash of Californian baroque sunshine pop.

🎤 We recorded the last overdubs in Rambouillet: see Médéric recording the solo on slide 3 (video by @benjamin_cebrian ). But the best moment was hearing Dent’s vocals for the first time. They fit perfectly, and (yes, see slide 1) he looks a bit like Hadrien, so it felt like welcoming an old friend into the band.

💿 Dent May’s new album The Big One is out and it’s another classic. Go buy it!
