DePaul Vera was selected for his work, "My Soul To Keep," exploring the connections of discrimination, mass media, and construction of our own narratives. His work displays images of segregation and discrimination from the 1950s and 1960s that are then merged with current trends of digital collage. “With this dynamic, I’m able to tap into surrealism where I’m taking bits and pieces of reality and exaggerating their truths while seamlessly adding my Black Queer perspective,” the artist explains.

"The collages reflect my current state of mind. We are living in chaotic times where discrimination and hatred are rapid occurrences that are becoming second nature. My collages are not jigsaw puzzles, but more so like Rubix cubes. They are all jumbled up, each telling their own story and may be similar, but they won’t ever truly complete a narrative unless they are arranged accordingly. I filter through thousands of images from mass media as a means of finding visual solace contrasted with hatred. Only then can I visualize how my imagination and my reality taunt, infuriate, and inspire one another. The work is not meant to chaperone an experience nor is it necessarily forcing a call to action. More so just allowing space for my audience to contemplate how images have no meaning until we give them the power to impact us."

Green Space Miami is proud to introduce the artists of our inaugural Green Space Initiative, who are using their art to explore the critical issues of our time.

DePaul Vera is a designer, illustrator, and color enthusiast living in Miami Beach. Born in Nashville, Tennessee to a conservative, single-mother home, Vera's exposure to a limited worldview remained constant throughout his childhood. After settling in Cadiz, Kentucky where homophobic bullies, rich White kids, and right-wing Christian values surrounded him, he aspired to become an artist to explore his differences with such values. However, moving only 30 minutes away to pursue an undergraduate degree in drawing didn't provide much variety; instead, Murray State University equipped him with the confidence and competence to continue his pursuit as a professional artist. From there he was fortunate to travel to Barcelona, Spain where self-acceptance of his sexuality and achieving dreams came to fruition. Now, after obtaining his graduate degree in visual art and design, Vera's work is grounded in the pursuit of understanding desire through curiously exploring different methods of art making–ranging from drawing and silkscreening to archiving and collaging. The University of Nevada, Reno emboldened Vera to hone his voice as an artist to not only understand his own privilege but to question and challenge worldview perspectives.

Welp. One year down!💍💍

To my lovely, handsome, funny, husband, @steviegreno - I love you more than words can express and there is no one I’d rather walk this road with. You make me smile when I’m grumpy, you always listen to me, you are my rock when I’m not strong, and you make me a better man.

I love you. 😘💙🍾
