✨A moment for the dress ✨

Weddings are magical to begin with, but having your unbelievably talented friend @designblender.co upcycle your mom’s wedding dress for your own big day was a dream come true.

Having previously worked within fashion upcycling, it was a no brainer to one day repurpose my mom’s dress - one of the perks of being an only child- and I wanted to share with you the BTS of this extremely special process which took the best part of 10 months.

Swipe through to see how this gorgeous dress looked in 1992 (side note: how 🔥do my parents look!?) and the step by step transformation- no filter.

The sketching! The cutting! The stitching! The steaming!

Alexa transformed Marie Therese (yes we gave the dress a name) into 3 separate looks for our ceremony, reception and party. Best part? I can rewear these upcycled pieces separately in future as each look was made as a top, and removable skirt/shorts elements.

I can’t say which look was my favourite but I can say that this journey of spending time with my family, hearing the story of how my mom found the dress originally, and working with a dear friend has been one of the most special experiences of my life. I will cherish this journey full of love, craft, beauty and collaboration forever.

This to me is why fashion matters.

Thank you Alexa 🤍

Persevering with my challenge to wear everything in my wardrobe by the 31/12/23?

Current score 62/186

Progress has slowed this week, life’s been busy and I’ve been reaching for the same things over and over..

Do you do that?

Apparently most of us wear just a quarter of our clothes regularly?

And that sort of makes sense. Now i’m a student and mostly working from home, there are definitely tailored trousers and frocks that I don’t wear…

But there are other clothes I wore on repeat last year, or the year before, that I’m not reaching for..

And other things like the black @isabelmarant top in the first picture, which is significantly nicer than I’ve made it look, that I always reach for, even after nine years…

Do you have pieces like that?

Take a moment to look at what you’re wearing…

When did you buy it? Where were you? Was it in a shop? Perhaps you were on holiday, or out with a friend? Or was it a quick online purchase on your phone on your commute home?

Was it something you needed? Or always wanted? Saved up for? Or was it an impulse purchase? Or the best you could find after a whole day of looking?

Perhaps you made it?

Do you remember it’s story?

And does that change how you feel about it?

I’ve been doing this feed and typing what I’m wearing and how long I’ve owned things for 3 years now, and today it struck me that one of the things that’s really changed is the interactions I now have with my clothes. I’ve mended them, upcycled them, hunted for them secondhand, waited for them, saved up and bought from designers I admire…

And rather than having wardrobes full of the latest trends, whatever they are, shouldn’t we be looking for wardrobes full of friends, stories and memories?

If you’ve read this far, do you know what I mean?

Do you find yourself wearing the same things over and over again?

I do!

I was recently reminded that most of us wear twenty percent of the clothes in our wardrobes eighty percent of the time…

Probably haven’t worn half of them in the last year… and most of us have clothes hanging in our wardrobes that we’ve never ever worn…

So I think I’m going to resurrect a challenge I took on when I first started this feed… can I wear all of the clothes I own more than once by the end of the year?

Sounds easy? I’m not so sure? I own 185 items of clothing…

Of that there are 12 things I can’t wear… my mum’s, my gran’s, wouldn’t fit me anymore etc…

But I’m going to give it a go with the rest…

Anyone up for joining in?
