"Can you talk this phone recording from prison and turn it into a lead vocal?"

Most people wouldn't want to touch that complexity, I saw it as a challenge!

I was relearning one of my solos and Ivy decided my lap was more important than the fretboard.

I write solos I actually want to play again.
Not because they're technically impressive.
Because they're fun.

Ivy doesn't care if the phrasing is clean.
She cares that my lap is available.

Sometimes the best practice session is the one where a cat meows at you for stopping. 😂

Practicing leads to prepare for client work, and this is one of my favorites. I wrote the lead after the songs were tracked strictly vocal and acoustic. I had the lead melody going through my head, so I recorded it and sent it to them to proof. I figured if they liked it, we both win, if not I can write something else to go underneath it.

Not only did they like it, they hired me to be the backing band and write and play drums, bass, and leads for the rest of the albim. So much fun, and still a favorite!

Ivy also wanted attention. 🤣

#tbt of turning a phone call from prison into a song!

A while back, I was hit up by @designedconvictions for a unique proposal. The vocals were sung over a prison phone, recorded into a cell phone, then given to me to make it feel like a song, not just a rocky phone recording.

Since I'm always up for a challenge, after quite a bit of experimenting, I found a way forward. The phone call had no high or low end, so it was all about making the effect sound like an on purpose effect, not just a cover up.

After an assortment of a plugin chain, we had a winner! It felt like an effect on the vocal creatively, which was the goal!

What kinds of challenges have you worked on as an artist or producer? How did you feel when you overcame the challenge?

How to build a post grunge intro!

First, we have the acoustic and vocals that my client performed. I fell in love immediately, as it reminded me of @aliceinchains #jarofflies, which is still one of my favorite albums all these years later.

Let's start with some cymbals! Slow intro to let the vocal repeat be the bed of the song and grow it behind them.

Next, we add the bass for groove and vibe, adding a light doubler to increase the "watery" feel with it.

Last, let's add a lead to have the listener have something to focus on if the main vocal repeat doesn't hold the attention enough. Don't get me wrong... I love the vocals. But in the current attention span of society you have to retain attention, especially at the beginning to keep interest long enough to get to the meat of the song!

Lastly, we play everything together and have an intro that pulls our interest to hear where the song is going!

How could working with the right producer bring out the best in you?

How I turned this singer/songwriter song into a post grunge radio single!

This song was originally an acoustic and vocal track by @designedconvictions featuring @calebtwidwell. After the session, I had a lead guitar idea thst I threw down figuring that either a) they would like it, or b) I could use the lead in another song down the road if not. After I sent it over, they enjoyed it enough that we increased the project goal to adding drums, bass, lead guitar, and more electric guitar layers. To me, the sound was a bridge between country and 90's alternative metal. As a reference, I used albums such as @aliceinchains #jarofflies to get in the right headspace. I still love how it came out!

I appreciate those that put trust in me to bring out the best in their music. And I'll be looking for more to work with soon.

How could an outside perspective help you get to the next level?
