Hey TLC! It's Member Monday and we've got the talented @designermike here with us today. Read below and say hello!

1. Tell us about your lettering journey.

I've always loved letterforms since I was a kid writing letters back and forth to my cousin in California who had the best penmanship I had seen up until that point. Then I was introduced to calligraphy by a family friend who practiced a bit himself. As I grew in to my teenage years it was comic books and graffiti that kept me drawing letters. When I got into graphic design I naturally had an interest in fonts and typography, but always drew type layouts first, before searching for a font that matched my sketches. And sometime around 2010, a colleague sent me the Vimeo of Luca Barcellona's 'Legacy of Letters' which reignited my interest in calligraphy, and further research into his work led me to try brushlettering. Discovering the lettering community on Instagram has really kept me inspired and motivated to pursue and share my lettering practice, and combined with my experience in design has led to professional client projects.

2. How do you describe your style and what are the tools you use to achieve it?

I try not to limit myself to a style, but try and do everything with style. Lately, I've been mostly using Procreate on an iPad, but love to write in scripts with big chisel tips and mop markers. Of course, I always keep several brands of brush pens around.

3. What is your favourite type of project/service you provide?

I'm a graphic designer by trade, so I love solving visual communication problems for clients, even more so when my lettering works as the right solution for the job.

4. Where do you gather your inspiration from?

Design and typography is all around us, so I notice design details in ordinary things and am constantly taking mental notes about the type on signage, ads, people's clothing, and on packages. However, I seek inspiration outside of the design world. Lately, I've been finding a lot of inspiration in oil paintings and in the works of illustrators I follow online. (Continued in comments👇🏼)
