“It feels like half of me just got cut off.”

Losing a sibling is often described as feeling like an “amputation.”

However, a surprising yet relatable description that I often hear is that sibling loss can also feel like losing a “soulmate.” A reference that our culture typically reserves for romantic partners.

What I’ve found is that those who have lost their “born best friends” often describe sibling loss this way, which makes sense when we think about it.

Siblings lose our life’s witness. A part of our past, present, and future. Our best friends and the person we expected to be our life partner.

In this context, both “amputation” and losing a “soulmate” make perfect sense.

Destiny lost her brother Joseph who she describes as her best friend, creative partner, soulmate, and fellow musician, two days after his 34th birthday in January 2011. She has spent the years since learning how to carry that loss forward without leaving him behind.

Yesterday was such a dream @itsgrieftastic ✨ and a massive thank you to @grant__garry for bringing such a special group together for one VERY exciting project.

To be able to finally meet SO many incredible people in person—many of which I’ve known for at least a couple of years now virtually—was the biggest gift 🥹

Thank you @meghan.riordan.jarvis for putting on such a heartwarming, informative, powerful event that brings so many of us in this space together. The energy was so palpable.

I’m deeply grateful for these friendships (both new and old) and the impact this community has made on my life 🥹 just an example of the power of a community full of people who see you, validate you, and love on you for exactly who you are 🩷

I have written songs and sang since I can remember. But it was only a year ago that I decided to work up the courage to go out and share my music. So happy I did, partly in thanks to @destinyrael and my husband for giving me a much needed nudge! (Destiny is the best, go check her out)✨

🎙️Ep 28-Rising from Grief with Destiny Rael

In today’s season finale of Season 2, we welcome the radiant Destiny Rael. I met her in Los Angeles through a friend, and it was truly love at first sight—her charisma is magnetic. Destiny is raw, real, and deeply authentic. She takes full ownership of her past and a childhood that was far from easy. Above all, she continues to honor the memory of her brother, who passed away far too young.
How do we recover from the loss of a sibling? How do we find joy in life when it feels so unfair? Destiny reminds us that we keep going—not by pretending the pain isn’t there, but by creating, moving forward, and embracing that tender mix of grief and joy that makes us fully human.
Her path is uniquely hers. Rather than remain stuck in the weight of her Sicilian and Eastern European roots, she chose to rise. She chose to sing, to use her voice, and to honor her gift—while helping others discover theirs.

🕊️ Today made it very real on his birthday. My very dear friend that cannot be summed up in one post was introduced to me by a mutual friend who was starting a website that was featuring both of us. That year was around 1999, and that friend was Malcolm. Our music lessons and conversations grew to an amazing friendship with mutual respect for musicianship. He would call while I was in Memphis & share ideas and let me listen to albums before they were released. For decades, we have celebrated each other’s birthdays, and in recent years, he was expanding his talents by adding trumpet because his daughter liked it. So I received a birthday message a couple of years ago.. the trumpet was crackly, the notes were a little rough..but this is who Malcolm was…never afraid to try something new to be better, and always encouraging those around him to be and do better. The video you see above is only one year later from the crackly notes. One year later and he was playing jazz runs with a solid trumpet tone for the birthday message, and he was so proud to show me that. He had just sent me some new musical ideas a few weeks before this tragedy, and we spoke often in video messages, so it’s been rough going through so much music and memories these past few weeks, but I feel energized to do my part to contribute to his being remembered as a musician as well. I think of the video that was circulating of him telling people to smile and remembered he insisted on laughing through the 1st track of my 2nd album as he was just so happy I was finally doing that project. So grateful for having created a song with him & @lyoungonline on that same album and sharing in that musical tribute to him at Vibrato. Continued prayers for Ms. Pamela, his family, friends, and his global reach of people he touched.
