MID/EVIL TIMES (dir. Devon Daneil Green) screens on Nov. 21st 2026 at the Cinecenta at 6pm + Q&A with Devon as a part of DUFF. Tickets on duffvictoria.neocities.com via @gigpit.ca

In the near future, criminals are forced to act in art movies instead of going to jail. Ten years later, a group of theatre students attempt to recreate one of these films. Part Godard video-essay, part cheeky sci-fi comedy, Mid/Evil Times is a wildly inventive micro-budget film that plays with art, artifice, labour, authenticity, and the nature of cinema itself.

Made with an SOV ethos and a restless, unpredictable style, it is a whimsical mindfuck that constantly asks viewers to expect the unexpected.

“Green’s ambitious film is made up almost entirely of digressions that reflect the hyperactive contemporary mind and its maker’s own unique concerns and sense of humor.”

MID/EVIL TIMES. Monday, 5/11 at 7:30!

In the near future, petty criminals are sentenced to act in art films in lieu of jail time. 10 years after that, groups of experimental theater students and clandestine filmmakers attempt to recreate an iconic “lost” film from this era, the mysterious, and possibly haunted, MID/EVIL TIMES…

Shot with gear, locations and friends all borrowed and stolen, MID/EVIL TIMES is a broken kaleidoscope of SOV filmmaking, reflecting the horrors and joys of the creative act in a world overtly hostile towards free expression. Featuring a cast of familiar faces from the LA underground film scene, “Weener Kleener Soap”, and gratuitous Godard references, behold this evocation of the past and questionable conjuring of the future.

“MID/EVIL TIMES shirks commercial film form in the hopes of leaving the status quo with an irritating case of heartburn. Seeing a work of such naked daring with an audience is damn important—what’s the point of watching a trapeze act on YouTube when in person you can feel the tension of the person in the seat next to you? For cinephiles who are equally enamored with ambitious auteur fare such as MEGALOPOLIS (2024) or PSYCHOS IN LOVE (1987), your new movie just pulled up and it needs gas money.” - Chris Shield, Screen Slate

We had a great time covering LAFM for Screen Slate. It’s a very special event made possible by the hard work of a lot of very special people. Check out our report and pay close attention to the festival highlights we mention and try to catch them when they play a theater near you or become available to stream. In the words of Kate Berlandt, “Cinema is not dead!”
