A preening galah in oils — because even the quiet, everyday moments deserve to be seen as art. Soft colour, subtle character, and a little touch of attitude. 🎨

Thank you to @di_cross__ for providing the inspiration for this oil painting.

"A pair of rainbow lorikeets that I photographed about 2 weeks ago in the hollow at our local lake. This particular hollow seems to be a favourite with this species each year 🌈 "—Di Cross

Tree hollows, like this one, are nature's apartments for many of Australia's unique wildlife. From birds to bats, possums to reptiles, many species rely on just the right kind of hollow to feed, breed, and stay safe from predators.

But here’s the catch: hollows like these take hundreds of years to form. With the ongoing destruction of old growth trees and forests, the species that rely on them are increasingly at risk. Many species need hollows that are specific sizes and shapes, and when they're in short supply, animals may compete fiercely for the remaining ones.

Protecting old trees, special forests and bushland across the continent is critical to ensure Australia's hollow-dwelling species have a fighting chance. 💚

Brolga captured by @di_cross_photos near Leitchville. The name Brolga is taken from the Aboriginal language Gamilaraay, in which they are called, burralga. The Brolga is one of Australia’s largest flying birds and are best known for their intricate and ritualised dance.

New Holland honeyeaters are popular visitors to gardens in many capital cities in Australia 🐦

To encourage small birds like the New Holland honeyeater into your garden, provide plants that will offer need protective, dense vegetation areas. Think densely woody shrubs, like prickly Hakeas, Bursaria and Leptospermum 🌳
