The man in the arena 🌺

There is something about this island few will ever understand.

A place where dreams are chased, limits are tested, and even the strongest are humbled.

You arrive believing you know what you’re capable of. You spend months preparing, sacrificing, imagining the perfect race.

And then Kona reminds you that nothing is promised.

@markallengrip understood that long before most of us. That to truly race this island, you must learn to surrender to it. To let go of what you cannot control, to quiet the mind, and to find something deeper within yourself when the race begins to unravel.

This year, the island had a different lesson for me.

It taught me that strength isn’t always measured by how fast you go, where you finish, or whether the day unfolds as you imagined.

Sometimes it’s measured by what remains when those things are taken away.

The willingness to keep fighting.
The courage to let go.
The freedom to find joy in the struggle.

By the time I reached the marathon, the race I had dreamed of was gone.

But I was still in the arena.

Still daring.
Still discovering.
Still chasing the limits of what was possible.

And somewhere along those 26.2 miles, I stopped mourning the race that could have been and fell in love with the race that was.

Because the beauty of this pursuit was never the certainty of success.

It was having the courage to risk failure in the first place.

To stand in the arena, imperfect and vulnerable, knowing that the outcome is never guaranteed.

And to give yourself to it anyway.

Two years ago, Kona taught me what it felt like when everything came together.

This year, it taught me who I could be when everything didn’t.

And perhaps the most beautiful irony of it all?

On a day when so much slipped beyond my control, I ran the fastest Ironman marathon of my life.

2:57. A new personal best.

A reminder that even when the race doesn’t give you what you came for, there’s still something extraordinary waiting to be discovered.

And maybe that’s why we keep stepping into the arena in the first place ❤️

This sport can be so beautiful yet so cruel. This is a Kona finish line I will never forget 🌺

Yesterday I was having the dream day in Kona. For the first time ever, I made the front pack swim and was sitting in 7th overall on the bike until disaster struck.

Rolling out of the aid station at mile 28 I hit a big rock and nearly crashed, completely splitting my wheel. Luckily after waiting 20 mins for support I was able to carry on, but had fallen from 7th to 360th place.

In that moment, I knew the result I’d dreamed of was gone. But I also knew I had a choice in how I approached the rest of my day.

Not long after getting back on the bike, I met @nicholaslam787. We rode together for the next hour, and what could have been one of the lowest moments of my race became an experience I’ll always cherish. That hour completely changed my perspective on the day.

Coming into T2, I was greeted by @jenafakroddin, who fired me up to keep moving forward and start running the field down.

And that’s exactly what I did. I went on to run a 2:57 marathon, my fastest Ironman marathon ever, and fought my way back to 17th in my age group.

Not the result I came to Kona chasing, but a performance and a finish line I’ll never forget.

Sometimes this sport gives you everything. Sometimes it takes away the result you worked so hard for. But yesterday reminded me that there’s so much more to this journey than a finishing place.

Mahalo, Kona. Until next time. 🤙🌋

It all comes down to this. One day. One race. One island. Back where it all began, and where it always belonged. 🌺

Two years later, we’re back on the Big Island chasing that same crazy dream of finding out just how far we can push our limits.

Grateful for the journey, the people who make it all possible, and another opportunity to toe the line on triathlon’s biggest stage.

The hay is in the barn. The vibes are high. Let’s have ourselves a day! 🤙🌋

70.3 Omaha 🌽🥈

Asking the body to race just three weeks after Ironman Jacksonville was a big ask. Although I’ll never be doing that again, sometimes you just gotta F around and find out.

Far from the performance I know I’m capable of but a lot of positives coming out of this race block heading into the Kona build. Back to back second place finishes after leading both races keeps the fire burning hot.

Hats off to @kadelayton11 for putting on a clinic of a bike/run, well deserving of the win 🤝

Onward to the big dance 🌺

10 Ironmans later and the sport continues to find new ways to humble you…

Maybe that’s why I love it so much and what keeps pulling me back for more.

At some point these races stopped feeling dramatic to me and started feeling surgical.

Control what you can.
Adapt around what you can’t.
And when the wheels inevitably fall off, because they usually do, keep moving forward.

Jacksonville wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t need to be.

Somewhere along the way I stopped chasing perfect races and started appreciating the honest ones.

Ten down. Who knows how many to go.

Thanks for continuing to follow this crazy journey.
