Twenty-four-year-old Susan “Su” Taraskiewicz was found murdered in the trunk of her car in Revere, Massachusetts, on September 14, 1992, two days after leaving her night shift at Logan International Airport. Her case remains an active, unsolved investigation, with authorities long suspecting a connection to workplace harassment or illegal activities at the airport.

From the moment I first encountered the cover of The Summer Before, I knew I had to pick it up. The captivating style, striking image, and evocative colors immediately drew me in, hinting at the powerful story contained within its pages. This is a novel that will pull at all your emotions.

Dianne C. Braley introduces us to Summer and Madeline, whose childhood bond is inseparable. Summer, whose mother works for Madeline’s affluent family, spends virtually all her free time with her best friend. Their perfect world is ripped apart by a secret Summer carries, the revelation of which forever alters the course of both their lives. The narrative then jumps to the present, where Madeline is still grappling with the trauma of her best friend’s fate as the case goes to trial, forcing her to relive every painful memory.

The novel is undeniably heavy in its subject matter. This book contains significant trigger warnings, which I strongly advise checking beforehand. However, I wholeheartedly commend the author’s technique; the story is allowed to unfold with a natural, organic pace that feels both authentic and emotionally earned. Braley handles this difficult material with care, making The Summer Before a memorable read.

Yesterday in the @bev_cam studio, I had the honor of sitting down with Dianne C. Braley—registered nurse, award-winning author, and lifelong creative—for Rise, Heal, and Grow. Dianne shared her powerful journey growing up in tough inner-city environments, navigating alcoholism in her family, and finding refuge in music and writing when the world felt raw and unsteady.

Though she followed a calling into nursing to help others, she never let go of her dream of writing.
