What can I say about the Firebirds? ❤️‍🔥

Another season in the books, another exciting ride.

Hockey has become my favorite sport to work on as a camera operator, but it’s the people that make it special. I’ve been unofficially adopted by the ice crew, made friendships with fans, and every game feels like its own adventure. Fuego brings the energy every game and plays it up for the camera (or me, I’m still not sure 😄)

Huge thank you to Gino, Grant, Evan, the entire broadcast crew, and everyone behind the scenes who made this season so much fun to be part of.

In broadcast you’re either a freelancing nomad or you find a home for a while — and with the Firebirds, I’ve genuinely felt at home.

Already looking forward to next season.

Thank you, Firebirds ❤️‍🔥

Imagine a huge stadium full of thousands of people. Finding one specific person quickly sounds impossible, but TV cameras are not just randomly searching.

First, there are multiple cameras placed at different angles. Some are wide cameras showing the whole crowd, while others are zoom cameras with powerful lenses that can focus on small sections very clearly.

Second, the cameraman is not working alone. There is a director sitting in a control room watching all camera feeds at once. The director tells the cameraman exactly where to look, like “section B, row 12, red shirt.” This already narrows down the search massively.

Third, cameras use optical zoom and stabilization. Optical zoom means the lens physically adjusts to magnify without losing quality, so even from far away, faces remain clear. Stabilization keeps the image steady while zooming.

Fourth, experienced cameramen are trained to scan crowds fast. They look for contrast and movement like bright clothes, waving hands, or people reacting emotionally. Human vision naturally detects these patterns quickly.

In some modern setups, there can also be software assistance that helps track faces or follow movement across frames, though human control is still dominant.

So, it feels like magic, but it is actually a mix of team coordination, powerful optics, and trained observation, all working together to spot you in just seconds.
