Photograph: My Great Uncle Fereydoon and wife, Nageeda’s wedding party.

Xala Fereydoon stands between his sisters, Lufti (left) and Dimen. Fereydoon’s sister,Ahwaz, gleefully peers in (pictured behind him). Nageeda, holding flowers, stands next to my mother, Rezan. The attending children stand in front, admiring the scene.

⭐️Note the details of dress, accessories and facial expressions; all play a part in this scene. My favourite detail is the adornment of traditional Kurdish necklaces, classic pearls and Nageeda’s clutch on her flowers.

My maternal family stand together for a picture during a sayran (picnic) trip. My mother stands on the far right, next to her beloved uncle who is beautifully dressed in Kurdish clothes, contrasting her own. The mountains behind them offering an idyllic view.

Before digital cameras, photographs like these were taken sparingly. Each frame became a record of family, place, and a moment worth preserving. This preserves moment during a road trip and picnic in the spring time.

I am reminded that archives are often built long before we recognise them as such. every family album preserves its own history, quietly documenting a record of our lives.

My Grandfather Haji Osman (right) and a friend (name unknown) stand together for a photograph.

Both gentlemen worked in hospital administration and were enjoying a day out with colleagues, in the mountains surrounding Slemani.

What I admire most about this photo is the contrast in their attire, with one in a tailored suit and the other in traditional Kurdish garments, reflecting the coexistence of modern and vernacular forms of dress in 1970s Kurdistan.

Location - Slemani, Kurdistan
