Two years ago, I walked into the kitchen of @amacademyrome and noticed some peculiar salt and pepper shakers on the table. They were encased in snow globes, with holes drilled into the plastic domes so that the shakers could still fulfill their intended function. They were weird. I wondered how long it had taken me to notice them. Were they there all along, or did they just appear? I was instantly amused by their inefficiency and confused as to why any factory would have produced such an impractical, ironic souvenir. But I quickly learned that these weren’t made for tourists. They were one of a kind and assembled by @devondikeou.

Her interventions turned up in unexpected places, from roast beef sandwiches to snacks encased in Christmas ornaments, deemed reindeer poop. A manila folder was once left on top of a bookshelf. A chafing dish appeared in the laundry room. They were easy to miss, and sometimes they were accidentally thrown out. You were rewarded if you paid attention and looked closely. The title of her project, The Inconspicouses, became more meaningful each day. And even as Devon often felt inconspicuous in the larger workings of the institution, for those of us living within its walls, she was central, a binding agent, just as she understood the butter in her recipes to be.

Whether she was taking Valentino by storm, spending an entire afternoon looking for the word “sex” hidden on Ritz crackers, talking to ghosts, or giving us an impromptu art history lesson, she made my work slower and my life richer for the short time that she was in it.

Rather than attempt to capture her impact, this is more of an introduction for those who didn’t know her. An artist, patron, collector, and publisher, she had long hoped to win the Rome Prize, and it hurts to wonder what might have come next.

In anticipation of her arrival in Rome, she had imagined a conversation with her childhood blanket, called Niney, about the eternal city. Niney—made of synthetic fiber and once analyzed and carbon-dated by a lab in New Zealand—remarked that she would live forever. And while Devon’s legacy will be preserved in the Archives of American Art, Niney will outlast us all.

I’m devastated to learn that our Dearest Devon Dikeou has left this earth. If you were lucky enough to be in her orbit you knew how original, brilliant, talented and so much fun she was! Erudite and a pop culture aficionado, subversively high and low brow and one of the smartest artists I ever met. She was my art viewing buddy, we loved & hated different work but always agreed on quality. She was a gem! A true polymath - she was not just an extraordinary artist but also the editor/publisher of Zing Magazine that gave SO many artists, writers, curators and editors a platform, many at the beginning of their careers. She was also a curator, writer and collector. Along with her brother Pany, they started the Dikeou Collection in Denver. So generous & thoughtful to the core. Thank goodness the breadth of her creative output, her whole artistic practice: all 3 archives of her Art Works, Zing Magazine & the Dikeou Collection entered into the @archivesamerart a couple years ago. Future scholars will be researching for this truly unique artist for years to come. Here are some photos of some fun we had in Rome during her @amacademyrome #romePrize year and Colorado when we went to see her Mid-Career Smear exhibition. Sending so much love to her husband Fernando @nandotroya and the whole family. Rest in Peace and Power my dear friend. Rock on Lady, Rock on. #devondikeou @zingmagazine #dikeoucollection

Devon was the classiest punk I ever met. With a sharp wit in language and art making she had a wholly unique life as an artist, collector, publisher and partier. Not always in Denver but forever present with consistent programming at her collection, it was the only place in town where I could bring college students to see high concept sculpture at any time. She even let me organize a student exhibition in 2012 at the main space which I think was the only outside curated exhibition that wasn’t work from the Dikeou Collection or her own and was so supportive of other projects I was involved in. Devon was also happy to put herself into the mix for a group show at Friend of a Friend which felt incredibly validating for our space.
Take it easy, if it’s easy take it twice 💔 @devondikeou
