Mindful as I am about books as a vehicle for reflection, learning, and discovery, I’ll be kicking off a #littlefreelibrary donating these from my personal collection 📚 at @filbookfestival. Come by and ask for any title ! My only request is after you’re done reading, 1) post a review and then 2) pass along the book to another interested reader. I look forward to meeting with you at the festival!! Many thanks to @radix.coop for publishing SIGNOS which got me started on my idea for GALLEON DREAMING. Books are weapons in the war of ideas. @johnbengan @the_real_delgadough @tildeclutter @kristinemuslim

No one's a fan of ghost ships, and Tortala are especially shy of them, as they are with most things, but it's probably for the best, as these Anito used to be hunted for their beautiful shells, which are said to glitter like moonstone and were often presented as gifts to spiritual leaders in Hinira. However, Tortala as a species are attuned to the moon in a way that enables them to hide with the rise and ebb of the tides, which furthers the illusion of their supposed rarity. They also rely on its celestial light to guide them to the shores from whence they hatched, as their first memory of the world is the intensity of its radiance upon the sand that incubated them. But just because these Anito are more inclined to run away from a fight doesn't mean they can't defend themselves. If push comes to shove, a Tortala's scales can fire off the moonlight they've accumulated into a foamy beam that not only washes off dirt, melts surf, and douses flame, but can also heal wounds and purge poisons in a mere second! So where does the name Tortala come from? Well it comes from a mix of tirtouga (Spanish for turtle) and Tala, the name for a Filipino goddess of the stars. But if that's the case, then what's with the heavy moon motif? Well that's because the main inspiration for this Anito comes from Libulan, the Visayan god of the moon, who was heavily associated with sea turtles. If you really want to see one, my advice would be to close your eyes and dream of galleons...

About She Who Devours: Twenty-one-year-old Maya Halili is determined to earn a full-time faculty position at the National University of the Seven Islands, the country’s most prestigious academic institution. She is willing to do whatever it takes, from running errands for her demanding adviser, Dr. Manalo, to clashing with her longtime rival, the infuriatingly brilliant and undeniably handsome Aga Kaneko. But beyond the university walls, the city of Santa Teresita is unraveling. A string of mysterious disappearances spreads fear through the streets, and the occupying Astyrian forces tighten their grip on Maya’s people. When the spirits of the Seven Islands begin to call to her, Maya’s carefully ordered world of ambition and scholarship collapses. Drawn into a secret society known as The Hand of Kaylahon, Maya discovers a hidden order of shamans who can summon the gods and serve as their vessels, at great personal cost. As an ancient evil stirs and threatens to plunge the islands into eternal darkness, The Hand urges Maya to accept the spirits’ call and stand with them in battle. To save her world, Maya must confront the dangerous truths buried in her past and navigate a landscape of rival shamans, terrifying creatures, and ruthless political forces. The fate of the Seven Islands hangs in the balance as tensions rise toward a war between humans and the divine. #beabustamante #shewhodevours #filipinofantasy
