Heads up, creative folks! Our friends and neighbors over at @thirdcoastpercussion are accepting applications for their Currents Creative Partnership until October 31st 🎃 Winners will work extensively with the group over the course of their 2027-28 season, including 3 in-person workshops at their studio and a performance of their work as part of their Chicago concert season.

The details:

- No application fee
- Application materials include: resume, score sample, recording, optional recommendation and artist statement
- $2500 honorarium for the selected composer
- Travel reimbursement up to $1000 for US based travel and $1500 for international travel
- Deadline October 31, 2026

Third Coast Percussion is delighted to welcome Kyle Flens (@kyleflens), who will be covering for ensemble member Peter Martin this fall during our European Tour with Jlin. Kyle will be performing Vernacular at the Barbican (London, UK), the Philharmonie de Paris (Paris, France), Le Lieu Unique (Nantes, France), BOZAR (Brussels, Belgium), Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), Parkstad Limburg (Heerlen, The Netherlands), and Romaeuropa (Rome, Italy), along with a performance of Aguas da Amazonia, also at Romaeuropa.

Kyle is a percussionist and drummer based in Chicago IL, and is considered by the Chicago Reader to
be one of “the city’s finest new music players.” Kyle is a member of the chamber music collective Ensemble
Dal Niente (@ensembledalniente), one half of the Flannau Duo (@flannau_duo), and a collaborator with the interdisciplinary percussion group Beyond
This Point (@btpensemble).

Kyle enjoys performing experimental music. His mallet playing in ensemble work has been praised by critics,
sounding “like the right pinch of seasoning on a good meal” (Hyde Park Herald). This gravitation to the avant
garde has led to concerts across the globe. Concert highlights include Teatro Colón (Buenos
Aires, Argentina), the Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enriquez (Mexico City, Mexico), the
MetLiveArts concert series (New York), the LA Philharmonic’s Noon to Midnight Festival at Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), the 5th International Festival of Percussion Ensembles (San José, Costa Rica), Institutio Inhotim (Minas Gerais, Brazil), The São Paulo Contemporary Composers Festival (Brazil), and the Phillips Collection concert series (Washington DC). Kyle has premiered over one hundred compositions by innovative composers and collaborators.

Our VERNACULAR tour starts tonight with a sold out show in Chicago 🔥👊🥁🎉 @mcachicago @chihumanities

We’re playing some of our favorite music by @jlin_p re-imagined for performance by TCP and Jlin. We’ll be live onstage together this whole tour! ❤️

The program include 2 new pieces J composed for this project, plus new versions of works she’s written for TCP over the years (including this piece ⬆️ Embryo, from her Pulitzer Prize-finalist work Perspective), and some of our favorites from Jlin’s other past projects — Akoma, Autobiography, and more.

Happy 90th to the one and only Steve Reich!

He was one of the first composers whose music we ever played. We won a Grammy for a recording of his music. And to this day we play his music on probably half the concerts we play.

You changed the game forever, Steve. Thanks for all that you’ve done for percussionists, musicians, and fans everywhere!
