POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

10 years as a cinematographer (and paying for @vimeo)

In the fall of 2016, was still in film school, I went to Camerimage festival. That one week changed everything.

I came home inspired, built a website, and realised that after several years of working as an assistant, I was ready to take the next step. That’s when my journey as a cinematographer began.

And what a journey these ten years have been.

So many stories. So many countries. Ups and downs, sleepless nights, moments of inspiration, flights, calls, hellos and goodbyes.

But looking back, what stays with me most is the people.

Thank you for trusting me, challenging me, and sharing this journey with me.

I feel lucky to do what I do, and grateful for everyone I’ve met along the way.

Thank you for these beautiful ten years.

Today, I want to share a few projects that mean a lot to me.

🌟 Meet Dima Barch! 🌟

On July 30th, we’re hosting our panel “Reclaiming the Other: Queerness in Horror and Sci-Fi.” From 11AM–1PM, join us for a vital (and dare we say horrific and surreal) conversation where you’ll get to meet our amazing panelist, Dima Barch! 🥳

🧠 Dima is a one of the most promising filmmakers emerging from Russia, known for his bold visual style and unapologetically queer voice. His breakout short film, DEAD END, introduced audiences to his fusion of horror, surrealism, and social commentary. His lasted short film, THE POWER TO THE STRIKE, set entirely in a bowling alley, channels the anarchic energy of George A. Romero, John Waters, and Gregg Araki. Praised by Dread Central for his hyper-stylized storytelling, Barch crafts worlds that are as subversive as they are visually striking. Now living in exile after publicly opposing Russia’s anti-LGBTQ+ policies, he continues to explore identity, rebellion, and liberation through genre cinema. Follow Dima and his work on socials — @dimabarch

🎬 Whether you’re into monsters and aliens to dystopian worlds and supernatural horror with queerness at the forefront, this is a conversation you definitely won’t want to miss.

🏳️‍🌈 We’re thrilled to have Dima with us, representing the incredible work being done at the intersection of queer social commentary and the horror genre in our community.

💜 As always, a huge thank you to @firstent for making our entire Summer Panel Series possible. Their continued support of queer filmmakers and our community has helped bring these conversations to life.

🎟️ Get your ticket through the @thequeerfilmcollective bio or visit queerfilmcollective.org/events and use discount code QFCSPS for $2 off! 💸

Horror and science fiction have always been more than genres. They’ve been places where queer creators could explore identity, transformation, fear, resistance, and hope when other stories wouldn’t make space for us.

Join us on Thursday, July 30 from 11AM–1PM for Reclaiming the Other: Queerness in Horror and Sci-Fi, a conversation exploring how queer filmmakers are using genre storytelling to challenge expectations, imagine new futures, and redefine what it means to be “other.”

From monsters and aliens to dystopian worlds and supernatural horror, we’ll discuss why these genres continue to resonate with queer audiences and how today’s filmmakers are reclaiming them to tell bold, authentic stories.

We’re honored to be joined by:
🎤 April Mendoza
🎤 Dima Barch
🎤 Sean Abley

Moderated by M.T. Peralta.

A special thank you, as always, to our presenting sponsor, @firstent for supporting the Queer Film Collective Summer Panel Series and helping make conversations like this possible.

🎟️ Tickets are available now at queerfilmcollective.org/events.

Queercore filmmaking is a cultural and social movement that began in the mid-1980s as an offshoot of the punk subculture. It is distinguished by its discontent with society in general, and specifically society’s disapproval of the LGBTQ+ community.

Queercore filmmaking expresses itself in a do-it-yourself manner and aesthetic. It is often micro-budget, but it can also be held by a hefty budget. Something is always at risk emotionally, spiritually, and in how the film is dreamt up and made. These are films made with tons of love and hard work, and a deep “indie film lifer” obsession with film and filmmaking, to borrow Sean Baker’s phrase.

Our brilliant patron saints of queercore are filmmakers like Cheryl Dunye, Jenni Olson, Gregg Araki, Derek Jarman, Kenneth Anger, Lizzie Borden and Chantal Akerman.

This collection of award-winning short films from all over the globe personifies queercore filmmaking. Some were made for literally zero dollars, without a crew and proper sound. Some were supported by film funds. All of them are a prism of queerness.

🎟️ Tickets available online 🎟️
