‘Who You Are’ (Pearl Jam) - Jameson’s Pub, Santa Monica, CA - 10.12.26 I finally got to cover my favorite (and a bit obscure) Pearl Jam song, ‘Who You Are’. It was their first single off of their No Code album in 1996. It sounded nothing like their previous work and was the band’s purposeful attempt to eschew their wildly growing fanbase and trim some of their popularity fat. And then you have Jack Irons unmistakably hypnotic and tribal polyrhythmic drum pattern over it. I remember hearing it that summer on the radio at my local pool. Afterwards, I ran home to ready a cassette tape so I could record it when Q101 in Chicago played it again later that night. Music aside, the lyrics (and my own interpretation of them) were what made me really love this song so much. Questioning what our purpose or role is in this shared universe is, and what effect we have, globally and individually. It just puts you in a completely different and unique headspace. I still get that feeling every time I listen to it. I hope I did the song justice with this version. It was the first time I’ve ever attempted to play it live. I got a little lost in that last verse and missed a few notes. I tried to include some of the elements from the original album’s version, like in the intro. This was also the house band’s first time trying it out, and we had never rehearsed it. I played a snippet of what I wanted the drum pattern to sound like on my loop pedal and then Dave took over with his interpretation and nailed it. Tim came in clutch playing half bass and half keys on the keyboard, while also adding coronet at the end. I wish I hadn’t come in as early for the outro so he could’ve played a little longer on it. Was so much fun getting to play this song! Thanks to Starr for making it all happen and for letting me play a set tonight. I sent the house band a link to the song and told them I wanna try this weird song out today haha. They agreed it was definitely strange. But that’s why I love that song so much, it was such a departure from their normal music. Even tried out a Foo Fighters song that I’ve always wanted to play. Also comically kind of known as “the Mentos song” since they parody the commercial in their music video. Many thanks to the house band for always being game for trying out new obscure songs. Also, thank you to Starr for letting me make up my missed slot last week after I got sick. Still hadn’t fully recovered my voice this week, but should be back by next week.

Jameson’s Pub Santa Monica, CA 09.07.26 [Electric guitar setup with effects pedals and looper] 1. ‘The Loneliest of Roads’ [last played in 2019] *^ 2. ‘Joey’ (Concrete Blonde) [new cover debut] *^ 3. ‘Young Turks’ (Rod Stewart) [full cover debut, previously only played the chorus section tagged onto the end of a song] *^ 4. ‘Calendar Days’ *^ *Tim Battig on keyboard, coronet on ‘Calendar Days’ ^Dave Denering on drums That was a fun time with the house band playing songs we mostly never played before. Brought back another old song that I hadn’t played in awhile. Tried out ‘Joey’ by Concrete Blonde, which along with ‘Young Turks’ by Rod Stewart are some of my favorite songs that I’ve never fully played live before. I’ve tagged the chorus of ‘Young Turks’ onto my song ‘We Were Never Meant To Be’ many times, but I’ve never played the full song. And then closed the set out with Dave’s favorite song of mine, ‘Calendar Days’. Which is off my newest album ‘Quandary’, that I just released last Friday. Check the links in my bio to find out where you can stream or buy it.

‘Roadblock To Your Heart’ - Jameson’s Pub, Santa Monica, CA - 08.17.26 Here’s the last of the four songs from this past Monday that I played off my 2015 album ‘Things Since You’. I hadn’t played it live since 2014. So, technically I never played it after releasing the album. Thanks again to the house band for learning this one on the fly. I always liked the vocal melody and moodiness on this one. Big thanks to the house band once again for playing this so well even without any prior rehearsal. ‘Burned’ - Jameson’s Pub, Santa Monica, CA - 08.17.26 Tried out another track off my Things Since You album from 2015. Song is called ‘Burned’, it’s about… well you can figure that part out. We’ve all been there. At some point you just get tired of it happening over and over again, especially by the same person. I got to let loose a little on this live version using the looper and play some tasty leads. This is one of my favorite songs to play live because of the mood it evokes. Many thanks to the house band for really finding and matching the spirit of the song. Tim Battig on keyboard Dave Denering on drums Me on vocals and electric guitar Lyrics and music by me

‘Things Since You’ - Jameson’s Pub, Santa Monica, CA - 08.17.26 Wanted to play some older original songs that I haven’t played in a while. This was the first track off the album that shares the same name, Things Since You. Wrote most of these tracks after my first visit to NYC back in 2014. Released this album in 2015. Probably one of my more favorite ones. Thanks to the house band for trying this song out. Tim Battig on keyboard Dave Denering on drums Me on vocals and electric guitar Lyrics and music by me

Haven’t played these songs in a while so I had to relearn them today. Many thanks to Tim and Dave of the house band for nailing these songs without ever rehearsing them before. I really liked how this set sounded tonight, so I think I will be diving back into more older songs.
