$A BATTLE FROZEN IN TIME | 1813–2026 After countless hours in the studio, my latest work is finally complete. Inspired by the historic 1813 naval battle between the French Aréthuse and British HMS Amelia, this piece is an amalgamation of interpretations by nineteenth-century marine painters, including Thomas Whitcombe, Louis-Philippe Crépin, and John Christian Schetky. More than 200 years later, I wanted to reinterpret their dramatic visions through my own artistic language. The ships were constructed using hundreds of ceramic fragments, each individually cut and hand-painted on the reverse side of the tile. The atmospheric background was created using hundreds of pieces of fabric, individually cut, torn, and hand-painted to capture the smoke, fire, and chaos of battle. Even the frame is a mosaic, handmade from sections of different frames. 2 metres tall × 1.5 metres wide. Hundreds of fragments. Countless hours. Two centuries of artistic inspiration. One battle.
