New on the AC blog ✨

Diya Abbas (@diyabbass) traces her journey from Pakistan to Iowa in "Hearing the Root: Indigenous Revolutionary Spiritualities from Kashmir to Iowa."

Struck by affinities in the Indigenous cosmologies rooted in both places, she says, "I heard the same rattle and thrum of the dholki in the powwow: a language of drums shared between the cosmic and astral ancestry of the Meskwaki and Sauk tribes."

Read more about where Diya found solidarity in Indigenous lifeways across continents at the link in our bio and see her work at diyabbas.com.

What if poetry isn’t an escape... but a way back? 🌿

Diya Abbas shares how poetry can help us move through artificial realities and return to something more honest, more human, and more deeply rooted.

It’s one of the many reasons we continue to gather around poems, not just to read them, but to experience them together.

Come be part of the next conversation. Stay tuned for our upcoming events in October 💭

Please join us in welcoming July resident artist Diya Abbas! Diya is a first-generation Pakistani poet from the Midwest. Her poems and essays are featured or forthcoming in Poetry Daily, North American Review, RHINO, Michigan Quarterly, Sinister Wisdom, Hayden's Ferry Review, and others. She is a Pushcart nominee who has performed for venues including The Lincoln Center, Andre De Shields Foundation, St.Louis Film Festival, among others, and has served as a poetry editor for Foglifter, Adroit, and Gasher Press. She was named the 2020 St.Louis Youth Poet Laureate, 2022 George B. Hill Poetry Prize, 2023 Lorine Niedecker Poetry Awardee, and the 2024 Lyman S.V. Judson Awardee in the Creative Arts. Diya is an alumnus of the only full-tuition hip-hop scholarship program in the world: First Wave. She is currently a Master's student at NYU’s Art Public Policy program. Find more of her muses at diyabbas.com.

Please join us on Thursday, July 30, from 12:00–2:00 PM for Lyric Cardiograms: A Poetry Workshop at the Nathaniel Rogers House in Bridgehampton led by Diya.

Can our bodies be poems? Can poems be clocks? Can our bodies be clocks? Exploring the relationship between lyric poetry and the heartbeat, this workshop considers how poetry is read and experienced through the body and in everyday life. Participants will work with sound, rhythm, syncopation, and poetic form to build and read bodies of poems.

The workshop is open to artists and non-artists across all disciplines and fields.

Lyric Cardiograms is part of the Upon This Ground series, co-sponsored with Ma’s House.

such a pleasure to curate the On Devotion folio of Poet Lore. thank you to every brilliant contributor & the @poetlore team <3 it thrills me that this call spoke to so many. i’m moved by the range of inquiry & heart, by poets who recognize that devoting ourselves to language means both to celebrate & confront, to not turn away from violence, genocide, grief. i only saw the top selections of nearly 700 submissions, from which it was still hard to choose. but this won’t be the last time you see a call from me re: the question of devotion (stay tuned).

these musical poems are sexy, contemplative, raging, tender, achy&&. my editor’s note & select poems are available to read online (poetlore.com). please consider supporting print media and order your copy to experience the full issue!

& if you’re interested in digging into questions of devotion on the page with me, my next generative workshop on devotion is on zoom Sat 8/8 11am-1230pm CT (link in bio) ❤️‍🔥

NEEDA

These images were made for our first crit project in Darcy’s class, where I had focused on lighting the back of the subject rather than the front. Experimenting with just outline and deriving details from the form rather than tone lead to some images here with intriguing insights and conversations with each of the models, people I knew.

What a beautiful night of readings.

Time and time again, I am reminded of just how magical storytelling is. But I think it’s even more powerful when it’s held in the right space. You can say the same words somewhere else and they can go unheard, or even be rejected. But in spaces where you are seen? Transcendent.

Thank you to @artsanddemocracy & @brooklynstani for creating a program that allowed us to cultivate and share our stories. Thank you to @urbane_brooklyn for hosting us in their beautiful space!

UNCLE TIME is coming soon! I’m really proud of this collection of surreal prose poems & I hope you’re able to grab a copy. Some of my favorite authors were generous enough to blurb this weird little book & I can’t thank @gasherpress enough for selecting this as the 2025 chapbook prize winner. They’ve been a joy to work with. I still can’t wrap my head around it.

Swipe to learn about the book, read the blurbs, and check out two excerpts, originally published in @autofocusbooks & @fencetagram

Pre-order available in the place where you’d expect it to be available
