**Sculpture Feature: “The Activist” by Djakou Kassis**

A commanding presence in contemporary sculpture, *The Activist* by Djakou Kassis is a tribute to resilience, courage, and the enduring power of voice. Sculpted in clay and cast in bonded stone, the work captures the spirit of those who challenge injustice and stand firmly for equality—not for spectacle, but for real, lasting change.

Kassis, a celebrated sculptor whose works were featured at Art Basel Miami, continues to shape conversations through form and material. *The Activist* stands as both a visual and ideological statement—one that resonates deeply with today’s collectors seeking pieces with meaning, relevance, and cultural weight.

This striking sculpture will be featured in the upcoming exhibition:
**“The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born — Collectors Edition”**
📍 Pittsburgh, PA

Collectors and patrons are invited to engage with a body of work that transcends aesthetics and speaks directly to the times.

Stay tuned for dates, private viewings, and acquisition opportunities.

Mitochondria Gallery is pleased to announce, Place of Repose III, the inaugural exhibition of 2026, opening January 31st. This third iteration of the series brings together new paintings and sculptures by nine contemporary artists whose practices collectively examine the conditions, aesthetics, and cultural significance of rest. The exhibition extends the project’s ongoing investigation into the spatial, psychological, and social dimensions of repose, foregrounding how individuals seek refuge within both interior and exterior environments. The works on view draw from the intimacies of domestic space, the restorative qualities of natural landscapes, interpersonal bonds, reflective self‑engagement, and inherited cultural rituals that shape understandings of rest and restoration.

The exhibition presents small to large scale figurative paintings on canvas by Opeyemi Matthew Olukotun, Okoye Chukwuemeka John, Kelani Fatai, Nedia Were, and Chika Idu. These artists employ representational strategies to explore embodiment, affect, and the everyday gestures through which rest is enacted and imagined. Also featured are landscape paintings by Izere Antoine, whose works evoke contemplative environments that frame nature as a site of stillness, refuge, and renewal.

Complementing the paintings, Place of Repose III features medium to large scale sculptural works by Agemo Francis, Nduka Ikechukwu, and Djakou Nathalie Kassi. Utilizing materials such as wood, aluminum, and textiles, these sculptors engage materiality as a site of cultural memory, structural tension, and tactile resonance, expanding the exhibition’s inquiry into how rest is materially constructed and symbolically articulated.

Cover |Before the Legacy, Hassan Aliyu Looks Back at the Fire That Started it All.

Some visual artists possess a rare gift of the ability to gently disarm collectors, devoted admirers, and curious art enthusiasts alike, guiding them often through the immediacy of social media and into those carefully curated moments of their creative odyssey. With each post, image, or reflection, they transport you precisely where they want you to be, inviting you to see, feel, and remember alongside them.

Hassan Aliyu stands firmly within this royal cast of storytellers and artists who understand that art does not end in the studio or on the gallery wall but lives on in shared memory and digital presence.

Words Ireho Aito | Don’t Keep Your Art in the Finger! Photographs credit: Dr. Hassan Aliyu

British born visual artist of Nigerian parentage, curator, and culture ambassador, Dr. Hassan Aliyu takes us gently but boldly back to where it all began. In a reflective Facebook post, the United Kingdom based artist opens a visual scrapbook of his early 20s, charting the raw energy, collaborations, and audacious confidence that shaped his formative years.

From his 1992 exhibition at 198 Gallery, to the socially engaged works produced through Norwood Art House, a community art project he co-founded with the great sculptor Raymond Watson, Aliyu recalls a period when art refused to stay confined within studio walls.

These were years when creativity spilled deliberately into public spaces, culminating in landmark projects such as the Grangewood Park mosaic (1997), created in collaboration with Salome Smeaton-Russell.
