🖤 💛 Cazumbá

📸 Photo: @thenotsolocal
🎨 Cazumbá made by: @lume__decorative

Did you know that the Cazumbá is one of the distinctive characters of Bumba Meu Boi from Maranhão, in Northeast Brazil?

The Cazumbá is especially connected to the Baixada style of Bumba Meu Boi.

In Maranhão, the word “sotaque” is used to describe the different traditional styles of Bumba Meu Boi. Each style has its own music, instruments, dances, costumes and characters.

The Cazumbá is a masked figure that combines human and animal features. With its large mask, colourful costume and playful movements, it is one of the most recognisable characters of the Baixada style.

Some people who take part in this tradition describe the Cazumbá as a playful spirit of the forest, connected with the protection of nature, animals and the life of the Boi.

The Cazumbá brings humour, movement and mystery to the celebration, while each group and performer can create their own version of the character.

The Cazumbá is much more than a costume. It is a character with an important place within the living cultural tradition of Bumba Meu Boi in Maranhão.

Bumba Meu Boi from Maranhão was recognised as Brazilian Cultural Heritage by IPHAN in 2011 and as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2019. 🇧🇷

Our Cazumbá is part of our journey through the cultural traditions of Maranhão in The Spirit of Brazil.

The Spirit of Brazil - Dance and Culture, a powerful dance show celebrating the richness of Brazilian culture from the North and Northeast. It honors Indigenous, African and European influences, showing the creation of a culture of rhythm, colour and strength from these connections. More than performance, it is about diversity, empowerment and the positive energy that has emerged.

I feel proud and privileged to be in this production.

👑 The King and Queen of Maracatu

Did you know that Maracatu Nação, also known as Maracatu de Baque Virado, has a King, a Queen and a royal court?

This Afro-Brazilian tradition comes from Pernambuco, in Northeast Brazil, particularly the Recife region. Its history is connected to the coronation of Black kings and queens of Congo during the colonial period in Brazil.

Over time, Black communities in Pernambuco transformed these traditions into Maracatu Nação. The royal court became an important part of the procession, with the King and Queen at its centre.

The beautiful costumes of the royal court are inspired by European royal courts of the 18th century, reflecting the colonial context in which the tradition developed.

Today, the King, Queen and royal court remain an important part of the history and identity of Maracatu Nação. 🇧🇷🥁

Our Maracatu Court will take the stage at @theblueroomtheatre in November. Come and experience it with us! 👑
