For The Self & The Avatar, Antónia Rosa invited former model and fashion creative Maria João Baginha to lead the art direction and casting. Drawing on decades of experience, Baginha selected the models whose individuality would define the story, while Diana Silva, a student from Antónia Rosa’s makeup course, created the monochromatic beauty looks.
„I entered the world of fashion purely by chance,“ Maria João tells ZOOT.

What began as an unexpected opportunity evolved into a career shaped by Portugal’s emerging fashion scene of the early 1990s. Working alongside designers and photographers transformed her understanding of fashion into a creative language.
„My world broadened, and I expanded my creativity by merging it with the works of artists.“
Today, Baginha channels that experience into mentoring the next generation.

„I don’t create clones or extensions of myself. On the contrary, I provide all the necessary tools so that the model can sculpt their own image.“
For The Self & The Avatar, she cast the models for their individuality, expressive ability and diversity—creating what she calls „a polychromatic ode to beauty through diversity.“
„As part of the training process, I teach the language of fashion—how to communicate with your body. Before working on the model’s expression, I correct their posture to foster a new awareness of their physical body. It’s an ongoing process.“ — Maria João Baginha

Josh Wald: The Art of Becoming

For Josh Wald, identity is not something we discover but something we create.
Raised on Cape Cod and shaped by twenty-six years in New York, the former model turned artist has built a practice around reinvention, transformation, and the freedom to continually reimagine who we are. Now based in Lisbon, Wald embraces the possibility of beginning again, treating identity not as something fixed, but as a series of choices, masks, and versions of ourselves.
Ahead of his latest exhibition, we spoke to Josh about creativity, courage, and the art of becoming. The show, hosted in his current atelier building before its redevelopment, will also support local housing advocacy group @habita.colectivoamid Lisbon’s ongoing transformation.
„There’s nothing that can be done about the rapid growth and economic changes happening in Lisbon, but how it happens can be changed. It’s the job of the government to take care of its people; if they don’t seem to, then it’s up to the people and their voice to make change.“
— Josh Wald

DUARTE MELO: CATCHER IN THE RYE

Portuguese actor and performer @duartepinhoemelo channels a controlled rebellion—where discipline meets instinct, and innocence becomes a deliberate act of resistance.

Duarte Melo doesn’t perform rebellion loudly. It’s built into him—preppy, precise, controlled—then quietly undone.
Framed through The Catcher in the Rye, this story resists nostalgia. It sits in tension—between control and impulse, identity and performance. Like Holden Caulfield, Duarte rejects surface. What’s left is physical. Immediate. Unresolved.

“I am about to turn 30 but I still carry the same dreams I had when I was fifteen. And I do what I do so I can keep playing—and through that, keep discovering myself, and the world.”
— Duarte Melo

ZOOT Backstage at MODALISBOA
AW26 VALENTIM QUARESMA
Behind the scenes with @jaypfort
@valentimquaresma
@lisboafashionweek

Captured immediately after the runway, this behind-the-scenes moment unfolded with urgency and intuition. Each model was invited, one by one, to step outside ModaLisboa backstage entrance and extend the narrative beyond the show itself on the street. Without staging or delay, the process embraced spontaneity — a fluid transition from performance to presence. The result is a raw and organic continuation of Valentim’s vision, where the energy of transformation is no longer contained, but lived in real time.
