Travel is beautiful, but being able to give back along the way makes it even more meaningful. 🤍🇨🇴

In May, my cousins and I spent a day volunteering with Digital Nomads, helping kids practice their English and build confidence in speaking a new language.

It was such a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful parts of traveling aren’t the places you visit, but the connections you make and the little ways you can give back. ✨

An experience I’ll always carry with me. 🫶🏼

The walk back down hit me harder than anything I’ve seen in Colombia.

Bello Oriente sits at the very top of Medellín, around 2,130 metres up. In this city, the later you arrived, the higher you live.

Most of the families here came as displaced people, fleeing violence in the countryside. They built their own homes up the mountain, one lot at a time. Many of those homes still have no legal title.

I went up this week with Sabine of @dnfgofficial (Digital Nomads for Good), who also works two days a week at Fundación Caminos. The foundation runs 17 projects supporting 469 children and their families. The children join in the activities, from football, dance and music to English classes, an environmental school and university grants, and their families get help too, such as food packages. Everything is free, but the children must attend school regularly.

It was lovely to see the children dancing, laughing and playing football. The walk back hit harder. The track down through the tin-and-timber houses was thick with mud and so slippery that I was grateful, and a little humbled, when men came out of their homes to make sure I didn’t fall. People who have so little, looking after the visitor.

Sabine’s message is in the first slide: if you’re in Medellín and want to help, start by understanding the culture. Then offer what you have. A skill, some time, or a donation.

If you visit, ask first and go through the community. This isn’t a stop on a tour.

Follow and support: @dnfgofficial and @funcaminos / childrenofmedellin.com

Thank you, Sabine, for taking me.

Everyone warned me about scopolamine, taxis and phone snatchers. Nobody told me who is most at risk.
It’s rural Colombians: many of them Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities and the leaders who defend them.

Between January and August this year, Colombia’s Ombudsman’s Office recorded 23,931 people displaced in 111 mass events. Another 80,369 were confined: blocked by armed groups from their fields, clinics and schools. A community forced out of its home about every two days. Those counts only cover mass events, so the real numbers are higher.

If you’ve looked up at the hillsides of Medellín, you’ve seen where some of them end up. Many of those barrios were built by families who fled this kind of violence with almost nothing.

And I love this country. I came for a month and I’m staying longer. People here help me before I’ve asked. Above all, I’m struck by the resilience. They’ve lived through decades of violence, and they still sing, laugh and look after strangers.

I can’t fix this from a café. But there are local foundations in this city doing the work every day. As a visitor, it can be difficult to know which foundations to support and who to trust. That’s where Digital Nomads for Good comes in: a registered foundation in the Netherlands (Colombian registration is in progress) that connects visitors with 18 vetted, locally led foundations in Medellín, making it easy to donate, volunteer or contribute your skills.

Several of DNfG’s partner foundations support communities affected by internal displacement and violence, including Sembrando Paz y Esperanza, Fundación Dame La Mano, Fundación Conciencia, Fundación Caminos and Cocina de Kima.

For standard donations, 80% goes to the partner foundations and 20% helps DNfG organize workshops, run the network and connect more people with local organizations.
You can support by donating at dnfg.ngo/shop. There’s no minimum.

The clip was filmed in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Thanks to my guide Jonathan for letting me share it.

🇨🇴 Today we traded Medellín for a little history, culture, and small-town Colombian charm!

We took a day trip with Medellín’s tourism board @camaramedellin to 📍 Santa Fe de Antioquia, about an hour outside of Medellín.

Once the capital of Antioquia, Santa Fe de Antioquia is known for its beautiful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, historic churches, warm climate, and rich Colombian history. It’s an easy escape from the city and a great way to experience another side of Antioquia beyond Medellín.

If you’re visiting Medellín and want to explore more of Colombia’s culture and history, Santa Fe de Antioquia deserves a spot on your itinerary. 🇨🇴✨

Would you take a day trip here while visiting Medellín? 👀 YES or NO? Let me know in the comments! 👇🏾
