POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The smorgasbord of sports and the passion it will incite among fans led us to wonder: What is America’s best sports city?

We asked nine writers — @GregBishopSI, @meridak, David Von Drehle, @MelissaIsaacsonMawrence, Darren A. Nichols (@dnick128), @williamfleitch, Dave Levinthal, Julie Kliegman (@jmkliegman) and Perry Bacon — to make their case.

Their choices are defined by grit, glamour and green energy.

Yesterday, Representative Noah Arbit(West Bloomfield) Arbit weaponized the West Bloomfield police department against India Dinges, Darrell J. Dinges and myself, as we attempted to enter a PUBLIC town meeting where Attorney General Dana Nessell was speaking about the Hate Crimes legislation that Brigitte Maxey and I worked on for 4 years. We were not allowed in because Representative Arbit doesn't want to acknowledge that I( and Black woman) was instrumental in getting the legislation completed, when in fact our attorney, Ron Liscombe created the language for the legislation, and 95% of that language ended up in the legislation. Imagine sponsoring Hate Crimes legislation, then turning around and discriminating against the Black woman who was the force behind the legislation. Imagine being so tone deaf, and bigoted, that in 2025 you put a Black family on the "not welcome" list at a town hall meeting about hate crimes and extremism. This was not done by a Republican, this was done by a Democrat. Arbit did EXACTLY what HB 5400 and 5401 was designed to prevent. He has harassed, threatened, and tried to intimidate my family and I for telling our story about the work we've done to get the legislation passed. This is unacceptable! Please call Attorney General Dana Nessell's office (313) 456-0240 as well as Noah Arbit's office (517) 373-3816 and let them know what you think of this type of behavior from elected officials, operating in their official capacity at a public event, paid for with OUR tax money! This is blatant discrimination! We registered for the event like everyone else, but we were put on the "not welcome list", because of Arbit's bigotry, abd his ego!

NEW #FLACKTALK EPISODE OUT:
Darren Nichols' resilience is special. He’s been a journalist in Detroit, Michigan for three decades and in 2014 while working on the biggest story in Detroit history, he unexpectedly had a stroke. Darren was down, but not out. His determination and winner’s attitude saw him put in six hour days during rehabilitation – not a common practice. That hard work, and lunch pail mentality means he’s bounced back: started DNick Media, and today his opinion columns on the state of the Motor City grace the pages of the Detroit Free Press. Darren is Detroit’s son, and everyone is happy he’s here to tell the stories of his hometown, and his own!

Coming back from the @knightfdn Media Forum this week with more ideas than ever! Thankful for the opportunity to speak alongside Danielle Brown, Ph.D.(@dandalion87), who has been leading research on identifying networks of trusted messengers and meeting their needs in Black communities across the Midwest for years. In addition to presenting key takeaways from Dr. Brown’s research, we introduced LIFTXVOICES, a partnership with @popupdocs , to create a public-facing, data-driven storytelling project that allows researchers from the LIFT project to collaborate with media makers to visualize the data. Our first workshop helped ten high school students learn the basics of researching, lighting, and filming video interviews for documentaries. 👏🏾👏🏾 Students!! Check out the story of Darren Nichols (@dnick128), a columnist and trusted messenger from Detroit who was identified in the latest research survey data in 2023. Learn more at www.liftproj.com #kmf24

PopUpDocs is a “Mobile Production Studio Inspiring Diverse Documentary Filmmakers” and I’m honored to have been asked to help with capturing the behind the scenes!

@jarradhenderson reached out and was looking for someone to document the process of the documentary (docu-ception?) workshops he and Dr. Danielle Brown are working on bringing to a larger national level, and I couldn’t be more excited for them!

10 students were selected from a pool of applicants to spend two weekends working at the @elplibrary to learn, capture, and showcase their videography, research, and storytelling skills- all completely free!

Using their newfound skills they then had the opportunity to interview Dr. Brown about her project, the Lift Project which “seeks to mitigate the harm of dishonest, misinformed, and incomplete narratives about Black communities” and Darren Nichols from the Detroit Free Press, who spoke of his career as a black journalist in Detroit and what that meant to him and the community.

I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity, and the chance to work with @alexisandbrianna @herpkenshofilms and all of the amazing students!

More pics to come, but for now check out @popupdocs and the Lift Project!
