Day breaks casting warm light over the par 3, 12th hole at Rock Creek Cattle Co. in its infancy. Designed by world renowned architect Tom Doak and his Renaissance team, this private Montana club is currently ranked 89th in the world. A well deserved ranking for this Big Sky gem!

It’s National Mulligan Day, the perfect day to feature the Mulligan Course, Ballyneal’s terrific Tom Doak-designed 12 hole par-3 course.

I’m a big fan of the proliferation of these creative short courses, especially at resorts and destination clubs, where they add variety and fun.

Tucked into the pines of northeast Texas in Mount Enterprise, @wildspringdunes has opened the first of multiple courses at recreational golf’s newest destination resort, which spreads across more than 2,400 acres of surprisingly dynamic land. Tom Doak brought with him a dream team of his associates to build the first course over a landscape of sandy soil, towering pines, open meadows, rugged ravines, and wild springs.

Tom Doak was already 12 courses into what has become a legendary career when he began work on Pacific Dunes, the second layout at the industry-disrupting @bandondunesgolf on the Oregon coast. He knew very well, though, that this was his chance to create something enduringly great; something that might be talked about not just as one of the best courses of his generation but as something comparable with the best in history.

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW 🌈 🌈 Any trip to the north of Scotland is worth a trip to Cabot Highlands...after a trip to Royal Dornoch in 2006 at the suggestion of a friend I drove by what would eventually be Cabot Highlands. At that point all we could do was look over a fence a some piles of dirt..20 years later I returned to photograph one of the great golf destinations in Scotland...and, with the recent opening of Old Petty it's only gotten better..
Don't miss it on your next trip 👍👍

Streamsong Blue. Another incredible example of Tom Doak’s architectural genius. Built on a former phosphate mining site in Central Florida, the landscape is unlike anything you’d expect to find in the Sunshine State. Towering sand dunes, dramatic elevation changes, massive bunkers and a sense of scale that’s difficult to capture in photos.

What began as a massive mining operation has become one of America’s premier golf destinations. Doak took full advantage of this extraordinary terrain, creating a course that feels both enormous and remarkably natural. A truly special walk.

The Wisconsin Dream 18 comes home with three very different holes - one of the state’s most iconic, one of Arnold Palmer’s own favorites and maybe my favorite golf hole in all of Wisconsin.

Hole 16 - @sentryworld

The Flower Hole needs little introduction. @rtj2golfdesign himself calls it his “Mona Lisa,” and more than 50,000 annuals are planted around the green each year - this season with a patriotic theme celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

SentryWorld may have par 3s I like even more architecturally, but there aren’t many golf holes anywhere that are more memorable or immediately recognizable than this one.

Hole 17 - The Arnold Palmer Course at @destinationgn

The 17th was one of The King’s own “Dream 18” holes, and it’s easy to see why.

This long par 5 hugs Lake Como down the entire left side before the water wraps around a peninsular green. It’s beautiful, demanding and requires focus from tee to green.

Hole 18 - Sedge Valley at @sandvalleygolf

Maybe my favorite golf hole in the entire state.

Inspired by Tom Doak’s fourth at Barnbougle Dunes, Sedge Valley’s short finishing par 4 gives you an enormous driving area - but where you choose to hit it matters tremendously. The multi-level split-fairways are separated by deep, nasty bunkers, giving you the chance to take on plenty of risk for a great look at a finishing birdie or eagle... or make a huge mess of things in a hurry.

Then there’s the punchbowl green waiting at the end - the cherry on top.

Fun, thoughtful, strategic, risky and playful - it’s a golf hole I could play over and over again, and I can’t think of a better place to finish this course.

Eighteen down. That’s my Wisconsin Dream 18.

What did I get right? What did I get completely wrong? And which holes would make yours?
