Last month, we gathered more than a hundred academics, activists, artists, Islamic scholars, and community elders in Dakar, Senegal to commemorate Malcolm X. Over three incredible days of fellowship, we reflected on the intersections between Islam and the Black Radical Tradition. Afterwards, many of us traveled to Goree Island, where we bore witness to the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade, and Medina Baye, where we saw how Islam, Sufism, and Pan-Africanism offer us new paths to liberation.

This historic gathering was the first initiative of our newly formed collective - AISSHA, or the Africana Islamic Social Sciences and Humanities Association. We’re just getting started! Stay tuned for other gatherings, publications, and initiatives in the future!

[🇧🇷 PT abaixo] Exploring the intersections of hip hop, Blackness, and Islam, Muslim Cool by @doctasuad offers a groundbreaking analysis of how young American Muslims negotiate identity, belonging, and social justice. 📚✨ Through the lens of music and culture, Abdul Khabeer challenges conventional narratives, illustrating how Black Muslim experiences and hip hop shape what it means to be Muslim in the United States. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in religious studies, Islam, race, and contemporary cultural movements. #MuslimCool #SuadAbdulKhabeer #HipHopStudies #BlackMuslims #ReligiousStudies #CulturalIdentity #SocialJustice

We spent two powerful days at the Muslim Mental Health Conference. (MMHC) diving deep into what it means to heal as a community.

From soul-centered approaches to addiction and faith-based resilience to conversations on collective violence, family healing, and revolutionary care, this space was full of heart, purpose, and action.

Grateful to stand alongside changemakers doing the work.
If you care about mental health, faith, and justice, this is the kind of space you want to be in.

I will start by saying what I always say: Su'ad Abdul Khabeer is my academic role model. How many academics you know also produce art and actively participate in their community? Her findings inform her community work, her art and vice versa: her art and community work is her research. And, as a Black Muslim woman professor in the current climate of precariousness, racism, zio lobbying and exploitation of academics, she is a living proof of Divine Mercy.

Muslim Cool is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. I remember the awe I felt when reading it for the first time. Not only its academic rigor was exemplary but the style and method was unlike anything I've read before. She starts the book with Bismillah and blessings, she considers her respondents as her teachers, and she heavily quotes hip hop classics as references. She erased in me the fear of being unapologetically Muslim in my writing, and using my life experiences to investigate society.

Never I read an academic book so real, so alive, so personal. Muslim Cool is a journey that invites us to meet various artists, community organisers and believers. They tell the story of Black Muslim America, a story of resistance, healing and hope. Like, did you know that Nation Of Islam were so big on the protection of the environment and eating healthy foods?

She explores the relationships and dynamics between Islam and its practice, fashion, power, consumerism, activism and of course music. Coolness, in this context, is not the modern influencer Cool of following consumerist trends and complying with power. The Black (Muslim) Coolness was to remain authentic to oneself despite the world being against you. Subvert, flip the codes. In her own terms, sampling and remixing.

Verdict: a book so good that I scrapped some "classic" method textbooks of my reading list and recommend Muslim Cool to my students as a major example of ethnographic/anthropological/sociological method and writing.

At a time when every like, follow and share is a bit of power, please follow her projects @doctasuad
