And not just burning …. Tanning is also a sign of Sun damage . It shows increased melanocyte activity and UV exposure is linked to increased risk of skin cancer including Melanoma

🫣Why won’t derms recommend St Ives Facial Acne Scrub? Or micro bead scrubs, or buff puffs, or facial loofahs?

🌰Manual scrubs, especially those with crushed walnut shells, can work a little too well—which is why St. Ives Apricot Fresh Skin Scrub, faced a lawsuit back in 2017.

🍑While the St. Ives Apricot Scrub lawsuit was tossed out of court in December 2018 (more on that below), Kylie Cosmetics also has a face scrub that uses crushed walnut shells to exfoliate!
.
🧴🔪The plaintiffs claim that the crushed walnut powder creates microscopic tears in your skin, posing risks of infections, and irritation, and that it is incorrectly labeled noncomedogenic (i.e., it doesn't clog pores) was not correct. Users have complained scrubs have caused inflammation, redness, and breakouts.
.
🩺"Dermatologist Tested" claims can be misleading because the phrase doesn't imply that it's derm-approved, rather it just means derms have tested the scrub.
.
⚰️It's worth noting that manual scrubs like St Ives have been around a long time. Some of us could use it and be totally fine. Those with sensitive skin or more serious issues like eczema or rosacea are most at risk for serious side effects from physical scrubs. They should start clear and lean on chemical exfoliation such as retinols, glycolics and salicylic acids in moderation.

Winter is coming! If you watch Game of Thrones, you’ll get the reference 😁. During the Fall and Winter months, we tend to be in closed toe shoes more. This can cause some of us to have odor in our feet.

The feet actually have a ton of sweat glands, just like under the arms 💦 It’s important to find the source of what’s causing your feet to excessively perspire so changes can be made to stop it from happening.

No worries if you’re unable to control the source because there are so many methods for treatment, including Botox injections!! Excessive moisture in the feet can cause fungus in the skin and nails, blisters, and other conditions, so it’s important get treated sooner than later!

Follow me for a typical day as a derm resident! 👩🏻‍⚕️

This was a Wednesday and I’m on inpatient consults this month. That means in the morning I’m at the hospital then in the afternoon I have my resident continuity clinic.

Other days of the week we might have lecture in the afternoon or surgery. Other monthly rotations we do include VA, Mohs, and pediatrics.

Curious if other residents/fellows have a similar or different schedule??

The journey to becoming a board-certified physician is quite the climb.

4 years of undergrad
4 years of medical school
1 year of research
1 intern year
3 years of dermatology
+ many MANY exams

... and when we all thought I was done, here I am applying for fellowship and going back-to-back interviews.

None of it without having friends, family, a significant other and lots of outdoor nature therapy to help me break up the monotony.
