Fresh off winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, 𝗡𝗨𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗥 offers a striking look at survival in a rapidly changing Canadian Arctic, and a layered portrait of the uneasy coexistence between humans and wildlife.

🐻‍❄️ When a polar bear wanders into Churchill, it’s both spectacle and threat. Ogled by tourists, and hunted by animal control, its own habitat now treats it as a nuisance.

In this expanded version of the original short by Gabriela Osio Vanden & Jack Weisman, diving into the phenomenon of “avinnaarjuk” (Inuit word for “nuisance bear”), you’ll spend nearly as much time observing the observers as you’ll do the magnificent white creature in the title.

With exceptionally beautiful footage, 𝗡𝗨𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗥 works on the level of a nature documentary — the kind David Attenborough himself could narrate. But it reaches further than PLANET EARTH ever could.

Yes, it’s a documentary about polar bears. But it also offers an incredibly interesting take on climate change, wildlife management, the effects of Western development, and the question of who gets to decide what belongs.

The word “nuisance” takes on a troubling new meaning: it’s about those who are simply 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺.

With narration from Indigenous elders, the filmmakers parallel the plight of the polar bears to those of Innuit lives affected by unwanted change, searching for what reconciliation could look like in a modern Canada.

This polar bear is smart enough to beat a bear trap, but is he wise enough to survive the world of humans? 🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️

As polar bears’ hunting ground shrinks, the bears begin wandering into town more frequently–endangering both themselves and neighboring humans. NUISANCE BEAR is a gorgeous, poetic, and immersive meditation on the impacts of painful history, climate change, ursine incursions, and human interventions.
