HOW IMPORTANT IS ANKLE STIFFNESS? 🤷🏾‍♂️

As a young S&C I was obsessed with chasing ankle stiffness and later realised it is just one component of a healthy and durable foot & ankle complex, but still important nonetheless.

We need the ankles to resist excessive lengthening under high force + the awareness & timing to execute this neuromuscular stiffness.

For me this is extremely important during acceleration. When creating momentum from nothing, our foot strikes behind our centre of mass, the Achilles tendon needs to act as a rigid force transmitter to allow the hip & knee to extend powerfully.

A lack of strength or coordination can lead to ankle collapsing towards the ground at first contact, resulting in longer ground contact times and limiting the ability to get up to our top speed quicker.

A lack of stiffness can also change the shin position and extension sequencing costing us force and time.

In short. Ankle stiffness helps us apply high forces during acceleration. A lack of it limits how quick we can build speed.

The video above shows a few variations we use to coordinate ankle stiffness! Try them & let us know how you get on!

OFF-SEASON TO IN-SEASON TRANSITION 🪜

You’ve used your time wisely, trained well and built a reserve of strength, speed and conditioning. Across the season left unchecked these qualities begin to deteriorate, this is the cost of high performance sport.

Our primary objective is to mitigate this decay, to ensure performance is up and injury risk stays low, then find ways to improve these qualities.

The latter being particularly challenging to naviagte with a busy game schedule. This is where having guidance becomes valuable, with sensible loading and periodisation and a training system developed to account for the changes the in-season period can bring, you can continue to go into matchday at your best, whilst making the most effective use of your time.

And if you need help with this, we’re right by your side. 🫡

Jadakiss would probably tell you. Do what makes sense. DDW.

DDW X IBRAHIM FULLAH 🗡️

A true professional with bags of ability and desire to improve, first senior season in the Championship completed. Still so much to attain.

We spent a lot of time across the last year improving his movement literacy and mobility to create better postures and place less stress on previous injury sites, and continued to develop his strong suits, allowing him to express his power output more efficiently.

Ready for another massive season, I’m looking forward to seeing him ball out.

Keep an eye out, Do what makes sense.
