Come explore Kingman + Heritage Island with us!

Join Urban Adventure Squad and our community partners for Kingman Island Friends and Family Day on Saturday, October 17!

Stop by the Urban Adventure Squad table for a hands-on crafting activity where we’re making our very own critters out of clay! Learn about Keystone Species and Species of Greater Conservation Need, and make a memento to take home from your island adventure.

There’s plenty more to explore, too! Bring some clothes to participate in the all-ages clothing swap or create your own sustainable island merch with block printing. Don't forget to check out activities celebrating DC’s waterways, wildlife, and green spaces.

Did you know? We use Kingman Island as an outdoor classroom for school-day programs and field trips, as well as summer adventures! Come see this incredible natural space for yourself and discover all it has to offer.

Breezy, buzzy early autumn afternoon in the pollinator garden.

Bees enjoying the asters, goldenrod, black-eyed Susans, and cosmos. Hibiscus in bloom. Ermine months for an unusual pop of color. Crimson clover and hairy vetch seeds sprouting (in just a week!) to prep the soil for winter.

If you’re a DC homeowner and you haven’t gotten RiverSmart, what are you even doing?? Check out doee.dc.gov/riversmart to get free or steeply discounted native landscaping, rebates and utility discounts.

Yesterday's rain has us reflecting on a successful season of FrogWatches! 🐸🌧
Our final FrogWatch of the year was one of our most magical yet! We had 35 volunteers join us under the nearly full moon on August 25th to monitor Kingman Island's frog species. Among the summer chorus of cicadas and crickets, if you listen closely, you can hear the occasional twang of an out-of-tune banjo... this twang is the distinct call of the green frog. If you visit Kingman at dusk, you'll be most successful to hear them for yourself at the south end of Heritage Island. While you're there, it's a great opportunity to look for bats! Our resident hoary and silver-haired bats were giving us a great show over the wildflower meadow. We meet once a month from March to August to study the trends of frog activity on the Islands. The data we collect contributes to further protection of our precious amphibian species here at Kingman + Heritage Islands. Thank you to our volunteers for your passion and contribution! See you next year!

Nature Near Schools is back for Year 5!

UAS is proud to be part of the Nature Near Schools program, bringing students outside during the school day to learn about their watershed and understand how everyday choices impact the health of our urban ecosystem.

Nature Near Schools is led by a cohort of five organizations that bring outdoor learning and watershed education to over 1,200 4th grade students at Title I schools in DC. Students conduct field studies in their schoolyards, create environmental action projects, and take a field trip to the heart of their watershed.

Here’s to another year of equitable outdoor learning and helping inspire the next generation to become stewards of the places they call home!
