2026 AAG - Researching Across Dualistic and Dichotomous Disciplinary Boundaries March 20, 2026 8:30 AM - 9:50 AM Nob Hill 10, 6th Floor, Hilton, Tower 3 San Francisco, CA Title Thirdspace Cartography: Counter-Mapping Territories of Extraction in Bor, Serbia Abstract How can architecture challenge extractive territorial changes through counter-cartographic and transscalar spatial practices? This paper explores this question using Bor, Serbia, a village heavily affected by copper mining linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Titled “Thirdspace Cartography: Counter-Mapping Transscalar Landscapes of Extraction in Bor, Serbia,” the research critiques traditional spatial planning and planetary urbanization frameworks, which often abstract resource geographies and overlook local lived experience. By combining geomatics, ethnography, and architectural analysis, the study advocates for a counter-cartographic approach that reveals how global sustainability efforts, often praised for their ecological benefits, rely on local dispossession, environmental harm, and bureaucratic exclusion. The paper creates a detailed geospatial archive that documents and visualizes these effects, illustrating how mapping and spatial data have been strategically utilized to facilitate land grabs and exacerbate social division (Scott 1998; Gordon 2008). Instead of viewing mapping as a neutral tool, this research treats it as a site of contestation and renewal, emphasizing participatory methods that use environmental sensor data, reverse-engineered cadastral records, and community-based cartography. By reimagining residents not just as subjects of extraction but as active creators of their environmental knowledge and memory, the paper demonstrates how counter-cartographies can empower marginalized groups. This work contributes to broader conversations on ecological justice, offering an ethical and practical approach to resisting and reshaping spatial power relations in contested extractive zones.

10th EUGOE Conference 2025 New Mining Futures in Left-behind Places Monday, 08 September 2025: 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm Austrian Academy of Sciences Bäckerstraße 13, 1010 Vienna @oeaw.at Session Abstract In response to the 2023 European Critical Raw Materials Act, EU member states are prioritizing local extraction of key materials like lithium and copper to reduce reliance on external sources and support the European Green Deal. However, new mining projects remain speculative, requiring significant investment and facing uncertain long-term demand. Many proposed sites are in former mining regions experiencing economic and social decline, sparking both hope and concern. This raises questions about whose visions and interests drive extraction, who benefits or suffers, and how such projects reshape power relations and regional identities. The session invites diverse theoretical and case-based reflections on these dynamics. Lecture Abstract Mitesh Dixit’s Genealogy of Power: Countermapping the Landscapes of Extraction in Krivelj, Serbia challenges Planetary Urbanization (PU) theory by analyzing copper extraction in Krivelj through the theoretical and visual approach of countertopography. While PU, as described by Brenner and Schmid, presents urbanization as a global process that links extraction areas, it risks ignoring the specific details of local lived experiences. Dixit’s research counters this by using critical mapping, including GIS, LIDAR, field recordings, and oral histories, to highlight the ecological, social, and cultural disruptions caused by Zijin Mining Group’s operations in Krivelj. These disruptions include environmental damage, community fragmentation, and job insecurity. Katz’s framework reinterprets Krivelj as a site of resistance, where global systems fail to fully incorporate local realities, thereby exposing the tensions and exclusions that are part of capitalist urbanization. By focusing on local stories and spatial injustices, the lecture challenges the homogenizing effects of PU and supports urban theories that recognize local agency, contradictions, and alternative futures emerging from these sites extraction.

Cartographies of Power Workshop We warmly invite all Krivelj residents to a Community Mapping Workshop at the Krivelj Community Center from Friday, May 9th, to Sunday, May 11th. This workshop is part of a research initiative led by Mitesh Dixit. The project critically examines the impacts of Zijin’s land acquisition and mining operations, focusing on environmental degradation, displacement, and the erosion of local livelihoods. Participants will engage with existing maps, diagrams, and surveys that document the strategies employed by Zijin and regional planning agencies in acquiring local lands. More importantly, the workshop will offer a space for the community to co-create new maps, capturing the real and personal narratives of those impacted by mining expansion.

STRAND 2024 12th International Conference STRAND International Conference: On Architecture December 5th, 2024 Gallery of Science & Technology Belgrade, Republic of Serbia Title Counter-Cartographies & Planetary Urbanization: A Critical Examination of the Collective Landscapes of Copper Mining in Bor, Serbia Abstract Dixit’s lecture explores the inadequacies of global theories such as “Planetary Urbanization” in capturing urbanization’s complex, localized dynamics, particularly in marginalized spaces. The lecture challenges the flattening effect of these frameworks, which often reduce urban development to homogenized constructs, by focusing on Bor, Serbia’s copper mining landscapes. Through a critical cartographic approach and the concept of “countertopography,” Dixit demonstrates how mapping can serve as both an analytical and emancipatory tool. This method highlights entangled geographies, local histories, and material realities, which dominant theories frequently overlook. Dixit’s research emphasizes the need to address urbanization as an incomplete and contingent process, revealing how localized practices in Bor—from abandoned sites to environmental transformations—offer a more nuanced understanding than the generalized “operational landscapes” of global capitalism. Inspired by localized studies, Dixit foregrounds the significance of specific labor practices, technologies, and ecological impacts, using Bor’s copper sites as emblematic of urbanization’s deeply embedded local-global tensions. The lecture posits that such counter-mapping can challenge dominant spatial narratives, moving beyond “extraction porn” to present mining sites with critical attention to human and environmental impacts. This approach reframes urbanization not merely as a global capitalist mechanism but as a diverse, contested, and locally grounded process. By recognizing these complex entanglements, Dixit calls for an inclusive urbanization theory that acknowledges marginalized actors and provides an analytical framework capable of addressing the limitations of totalizing urban models.

PUBLIC EVENT Landscapes of Exhaustion AND Hope with Amel Bešlagić, Mitesh Dixit, Nina Kraijnik, Hannah Proctor, and Philipp Sattler Monday, November 18th, 18.00 Institut für Zeitgenössische Kunst TU GRAZ Graz, Austria Program Introduction by Philipp Sattler Lectures & Performances by Amel Bešlagić, Mitesh Dixit, Nina Kraijnik, Hannah Proctor Followed by a panel discussion moderated by Philipp Sattler Overview To think about distant places, to colonize them, to populate ordepopulate them: all of this occurs on, about, or because of land. The actual geographical possession of land is what empire in thefinal analysis is all about. At the moment when a coincidence occurs between real control and power, the idea of what a given place was (could be, might become), and an actual place—at that moment the struggle for empire is launched. This coincidence is the logic both for Westerners taking possession of land and, during decolonisation, for resisting natives reclaiming it. — Edward Said, Culture and Imperialism, 1993 From climate collapse to permanent wars, life under capitalism devastates the planet. This event invites the participants to use the notion of exhaustion to discuss this current condition and by engaging landscapes, bodies, and people as sites of struggle for new languages and narratives – historical, potential, and actual – consider how to go beyond apocalyptic defeatism. Discussing tools and practices from which we might begin to build anew and continue to live within the ruins of trauma and loss, we ask, is there hope? Each speaker will address these questions with their current research in architecture, history, and psychoanalysis. @izk_tugraz @artchitection @ninakrajnikova @amelbeslagic @domain_office @miteshdixit @milica.tomic.tomic

We are delighted to look closer into IZK courses for Winter Semester 2024-25 Workshop 3 will bring together Mitesh Dixit and Nina Krajnik Material Contours. The Project of Extraction This workshop investigates the role of mapping in shaping and representing spatial realities, particularly in the context of extractive industries and urban growth. Asserting that maps actively construct reality by emphasizing certain features while excluding others students will learn to challenge traditional cartographic methodologies and generate new ways of visualizing and documenting the built environment. Art, War and Politics of the Unconscious. How to Express the Inexpressible? The world marked by conflict and crisis will be a point of encounter with the real - an experience where language fails and expression becomes challenging. Drawing on psychoanalytic concepts, we will examine the unconscious origins of symptoms and their manifestations. Each session will thus investigate the transformative power of art as a reflection of societal struggles.

Architecture Elective 2024-3IZ A12 by Mitesh Dixit + Vladimir Lojanica @arhbgd This seminar interrogates the significant and ongoing impacts of mining on urban development, with a special emphasis on the mining region of Bor in Eastern Serbia. This area has been a notable site of copper extraction since 1903. Annually, the global consumption of metals reaches approximately two billion tonnes—equivalent to the daily construction of 500 Eiffel Towers. Such intense industrial activity depletes geological resources and inflicts severe scars on the Earth’s crust, prompting critical questions about the handling and effectiveness of reclamation efforts and the broader impacts on ecosystems and human communities. The seminar explores the complex relationship between the extractive industry and urban growth, examining how Bor exemplifies the profound influences that mining has on territorial configuration, urban structures, and social fabrics. Through the lens of “mining urbanism,” students will investigate the evolution of Bor, tracing its development in response to the exigencies of mining. This exploration will extend to evaluating contemporary urban strategies to mitigate environmental and socio-economic repercussions of mining activities. This course presents methods of mapping cities through the lens of digital and analog archives. Students will employ GIS, data visualization, and 3D modeling tools to graphically narrate powerful stories about how mining cities change over time, from ecological conditions to agglomeration zones. The seminar will introduce data analysis and visualization techniques for remote sensing, demographic and economic data, environmental and atmospheric conditions, land cover, subsurface conditions, and more. Students will learn to convey morphological, demographic, or ecological phenomena through data archives such as the OSM or Landsat imagery. No prior experience with GIS is required. We are delighted to announce IZK courses for Winter Semester 2024-25 Material Contours The Project of Extraction Workshop 3 Course convened by Mitesh Dixit “...a map [is] not a tracing...the map is entirely oriented toward an experimentation in contact with the real. The map does not reproduce an unconscious closed contact with the real; it constructs the unconscious. It fosters connections between fields, removal of blockages on bodies without organs.” G. Deleuze and F. Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1980) This workshop investigates the role of mapping in shaping and representing spatial realities, particularly in the context of extractive industries and urban growth. Traditionally, maps have been seen as neutral depictions of geography, but this course challenges that notion, asserting that maps actively construct reality by emphasizing certain features while excluding others. Focusing on Bor, Serbia, a region shaped by copper mining since 1903, this course explores the profound impact of extraction on urban configurations, territorial boundaries, and social structures. It encourages students to develop technical and intellectual skills to critically examine these influences through the combined use of forensics, data analysis, and physical documentation. By employing digital and analog mapping techniques, students will learn to challenge traditional cartographic methodologies and generate new ways of visualizing and documenting the built environment. Students will gain practical proficiency in GIS, 3D modeling, and data visualization tools through discussions, readings, and hands-on workshops. These methods will equip them to dissect the multifaceted impacts of mining on urban spaces, fostering a reimagined understanding of spatial representation beyond the ocularcentric and Cartesian frameworks. Register for course 155.515 via TUG Online from 27.9 - 4.10 @miteshdixit @domain_office
