How are festivals keeping us safe? 🤔

To celebrate 10 years of @thisisgala , I went to see what’s new & how they are prioritising well-being and safety for their guests! 🎪✨

GALA has always impressed me with being a leader in the festival space for their 0 tolerance policy towards harassment & for how they take on feedback on how to improve their strategy each year.

So, what’s new? GALA has a Mutual Future Wellbeing Strategy with Don’t Be A Creep, who are dedicated to creating a safe, harassment-free space for everyone, regardless of gender, identity, age, sexual orientation, disability, body size, race, ethnicity, belief or religion.

This includes an event wellbeing plan, specialist in-house teams on site, an awareness campaign and a post-event survey which feeds information back into their plan, and campaign for the next year.

This is how they were able to take on advice from previous feedback and to change their whole security team this year 🙏

Also on site is @ttkwelfare , who manage the on-site welfare and have dedicated roaming staff across the festival grounds. And excitingly this year they worked with @safeonlycic , a peer-led welfare, security, and medic support org centred on harm reduction and inclusive, fair practice, grounded in real experience of Queer party culture. Safe Only ran the Pleasure Dome and were at the gate for anyone who preferred to be searched by a LGBTQI+ team🌈

Once again, I was impressed by how GALA creates such a safe, anti-racist and queer friendly space, and how they stand in solidarity with all communities and people who have experienced prejudice. Their objective is to make the environment as safe and inclusive as it can be, and that’s exactly how it felt.

At We Out Here Festival; We Only Have Now 💗

A festival built on foundations of family which extends to all attendees through our overriding sense of community. During overwhelming times, We Out Here is resistance through a celebration of joy and community.

By attending We Out Here you’re welcomed into our worldwide family. A place to be present and find joy in where you are, what you’re doing and who you’re with. At We Out Here we look out for one another to help make the festival a safe, positive and supporting place for everyone.

In collaboration with @dontbeacreep we present this year’s House Rules:

SUPPORT: If at any point you feel unsafe, uncomfortable, unhappy or stressed in a situation, our team is fully trained to support you. Our Welfare Tent is available for anyone in need of a space to sit, talk or take a time out. It’s signposted and located in the Main Arena next to Medical.

PERSONAL: our approach to any incident will be person-led. Behaviour we deem as disrespectful or disruptive to this community will result in education, eviction or police involvement - but most importantly - based on the wishes and needs of the person that has experienced harm.

COMMUNITY: Look out for one another, don’t be a passive bystander - we all have a role to play in making this space a safe one. If you see anyone in discomfort, please alert a member of staff and we can assist.

You are never alone at We Out Here, our team is here to provide you with the safety and support you need at any point; because We Only Have now.

Look out for the Don’t Be A Creep installation at We Out Here! 🎨
