So I had the chance to bid on some amazing pieces from @bjbdesign this past week. Some rare items he let go from his personal collection. This piece by Dora De Larios is one that is truly now a center piece of my collection and I can’t say thank you enough to Brent and his family for opening this opportunity up to everyone. #doradelarios #brentbennett #ceramics #potters #thankyou

LACMA coaxes its visitors to wander its gallery, to 'let curiosity be your compass'.

I followed the length of its curve, and at the very end, I found Octavia's Gaze, an assemblage archiving millennia of Afro-Atlantic transit that is also in part a tribute to writer Octavia Butler.

Elsewhere I stumbled upon a chest illustrating scenes from Hy-Brasil, a mythical place where the Irish people are free from British rule. We all need places and spaces of refuge, always have: and this one is a deeply compelling one.

Kitsch and tongue in cheek, Wendy Red Star's Fall is a self-portrait diorama that pokes holes in the familiar dioramas that once passed as depictions of Native American life in museums and the public imagination. I love the detail, the colour, and above all else, the critique.

Elsewhere, there were totemic sculptures that draw on Dora De Larios's decades-long study of goddess imagery. I didn't see the parallels to the four elements at first, but I knew it was feminine, somehow, and (therefore) probably divine.

So much of art is intuition, imagination and audacity. These had them all.

LACMA
David Geffen Galleries
Los Angeles

This is not a building you take in on one visit. On my third visit this week, a walkthrough with several LACMA curators helped elucidate the thinking behind the permanent collection installation:

The interconnection between civilizations told through a display of water carrying pots and the commonalities they share, exemplifying the role waterways play in connecting cultures throughout the millennia. Seeing familiar objects from the collection in a different context, against raw and deeply pigmented shades of concrete. Redefining how art is displayed and changing the narrative.

Still formulating my thoughts, but each visit brings me closer. I encourage you to visit for yourself and share your thoughts.

Dora’s totems in the new LACMA building! What a thrilling, emotional moment to see these powerful sculptures in the new David Geffen Galleries. Thank you @lacma for including them in the galleries debut, Dora’s legacy is well deserving of this honor. If you are a fan of Dora’s work and in LA you will want to see these beautiful sentries hovering over Wilshire Blvd. #doradelarios #lacma #sculpture #ceramicsculpture #doradelarioscreatedtheamountofworkofacivilization

Congratulations to Michael Govan, @lacma, the artists, and all who made the new LA County Museum of Art David Geffen Galleries possible. A monumental feat of art and architecture, designed by Peter Zumthor, with major @countyofla public funds and private philanthropic support, its opening realizes a vision for Los Angeles—and for global and contemporary art presented without hierarchy—that’s been decades in the making. A joy to be present for the official ribbon cutting ceremony and witness the public get to visit their new museum for the first time. ✨

Elizabeth Catlett’s “La Adelita”. Elizabeth was born in Washington, DC, in 1915 during the era of segregation, was deeply shaped by her grandparents’ stories about slavery. Despite being denied entry to Carnegie Mellon due to racial discrimination, she chose to study art at Howard University, learning from influential figures like Loïs Mailou Jones and James Porter. Elizabeth became passionate about social justice, playing an active role in anti-lynching protests and championing civil and workers’ rights. Inspired by Mexican muralists, she relocated to Mexico in 1946, joined the Taller de Gráfica Popular, and married Francisco Mora. In 1958, she broke new ground as the first woman to teach sculpture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Elizabeth devoted her entire life to both artistic pursuits and activism, demonstrating steadfast resilience with an unwavering sense of justice. This brief glimpse reveals only a single aspect of her extraordinary and multifaceted existence.

A little about Las Adelitas! During the 1910–1920 revolution, ‘La Adelitas’ weren’t just there to attend aid and cook for the Mexican Army, they were brave soldiers who fought hard in battles, brought weapons through secret routes, and played a vital part in the war. Their strength, determination, and active role in history have made them a lasting symbol. That’s why they’re celebrated in folklore, especially through the famous ballad La Adelita.
What’s not to love about this captivating piece? It’s a powerful reminder to find joy even when things get tough. As a singing and dancing Mexican American this piece resonates deeply with me. It’s simply perfect and a favorite of mine! #elizabethcatlett #doradelarios #doylelane

Beautiful news for Dora’s legacy! Dora’s Seated Woman sculpture is in the @crockerart Museum’s current exhibit “Making Moves”, an important exhibit surveying a collection of feminisms. Dora’s Seated Lady is in dialog with Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait with Loose Hair. This is a very important placement of Dora’s work. We are thrilled for the acknowledgment and deeply appreciate the Crocker for amplifying and supporting her legacy. #doradelarios #crockerart #crockerartmuseum #midcenturymodern sculpture
