Great Conversation! 🙏🏻🎉🙏🏻

“In Praise of Ambiguity: Play, affordance and the over-specified city”

Space to play — for citizens of all ages — is an under-recognised requirement of many cities, perhaps now more than ever a rethinking is needed. Thanks to @lokbi_lokbi @abstract_playscapes @sampson_wong our alumnus of 2018 M+/Design Trust fellows as they documented Hong Kong’s 1960s Shek Lei playground as a reflective and projective discussion — alongside Gabriela Burkhalter of “The Playground Project” and myself sharing on our long term “Design Trust Futures Studio programme on micro-parks” and my long time interest on play/ playgrounds and access to play as curatorial design and research.

Moderated by Federica Zambeletti on why ambiguity matters and the space of play and status of play today. A topic dear to our @designtrust team and our #community thank you @koozarch for the opportunity to share & @s__surya @misscxtn of M+ also 🙏🏻 and all the designers, mentors, mentees and team members for long term work and collaboration for the community spaces. Lots to plan still and do ! 🙏🏻 Yi Pei is so well and over used I had recent discussions and dialogues with #LCSD colleagues and time to think of next steps can’t believe it is been 9 years since 2017, on our first activation-“Small is Meaningful” and 5 years + since YPS launched , now onto new revitalization measures and potential re-learnings. Past, present to inform the future- long game -patience and perseverance. #playisforthepeole #designtrust #micropark thank you 🙏🏻

Three days of exchange in Barcelona brought together CIMAM Board members, Patrons and the city’s museum and cultural community through working sessions, professional encounters, visits to museums and galleries, and public conversations.

From 16 to 18 September, CIMAM Board members gathered for one of their three annual meetings to reflect on the organization’s ongoing work and mission. Meeting in Barcelona, home to CIMAM’s Executive Office, also created an opportunity to strengthen connections with local professionals and to discover some of the city’s museums, galleries, artists and exhibitions.

The program included two public conversations developed in collaboration with the MACBA Foundation and MACBA’s Public Programs, addressing sustainability and the ethical management of museum collections as key areas of institutional responsibility.

Our sincere thanks to all the professionals who joined us, to the museums and galleries that welcomed us, and to our Patrons for sharing these days with us. We are especially grateful to Han Nefkens for his warm hospitality and generosity with the CIMAM Board.

PROUD we kicked this off back in 2014: writing, developing and testing the fellowship criteria and vision. Sometimes we forget the significance of that period, and now fast forward, excited to see each fellow’s research, impact institutional building-and their own career trajectories. Thanks for inviting me back to this conversation Shirley & KOOZARCH!. Reflecting 12 years ago-and decade plus programme-what a memory lane-inspiring retrospective discussion!

*How can research shape institutions before they even exist?*

Conversation here https://www.koozarch.com/interviews/building-trust-learning-from-the-m-design-trust-research-fellowship; moderated by Federica @zambesmile @koozarch , and me speaking with @aricchen @s__surya & Ikko Yokoyama on a decade+ of the M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship. Especially now as we @designtrust continue our other fellowship programmes, forms of institutional-inquiry, making and critical thinking must go on!

It was such an honor to interview artist Lee Bul in Korea last year at her studio and at Leeum, and to share our conversation with thousands of people over the course of the show, including my family, who flew in for the @mplusmuseum opening ahead of Art March.

Special thanks to @amma_ateria for the sound composition, marking our first time experimenting with sound!

Congratulations and deep gratitude to @doryunchong, the M+ team, @lee.bul, and her studio.

On view through Sunday (!)

Some artists leave an impression. Others reshape the way we think about contemporary art. For over three decades, the visionary South Korean artist Lee Bul has challenged ideas of the body, technology, beauty, and progress through works that are as visually captivating as they are conceptually complex.

Now on view at M+ Museum, Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now is the artist’s most comprehensive retrospective to date, bringing together landmark works from the late 1990s to today; including the iconic Cyborg and Anagram series, alongside immersive installations that question utopian ideals and humanity’s relationship with technology.

In our latest CC Collective feature, Irene Lam reflects on experiencing the exhibition and meeting Lee Bul ahead of its opening. Visit M+ to experience one of the year’s most significant exhibitions.

What does it mean to be an artist today?

Doryun Chong (@doryunchong), the Artistic Director and Chief Curator of M+ (@mplusmuseum) who co-curated Lee Bul’s exhibition, describes her as, in many ways, a classical artist. She still draws every day. Some works stand on their own, others become plans for future sculptures. Her work may look futuristic, but it is grounded in something more classical: discipline, precision, and structure.

At its core is an ongoing question, not just of progress, but of its failures; spurring you, the viewer, to consider the decisions and the paths in your own life.

💬 Join us for ‘Space, Time and Life: Isamu Noguchi on Sculpture, Design, and Landscape’ with Doryun Chong, Artistic Director and Chief Curator at M+, Hong Kong.

⛰️ Noguchi’s work in landscape architecture was in a continuum with the other mediums, genres, and disciplines he worked in, such as modernist sculpture and industrial design.

🔎 This talk will look at how—like Bawa—Noguchi’s transdisciplinary vision led him to become a lodestar for navigating contemporary discourse on creative practice.

🇭🇰 Doryun Chong was appointed the inaugural Chief Curator of M+ in 2013 and oversees all curatorial activities and programmes at the museum, which holds over 36 works and a permanent ‘Playscape’ garden by Isamu Noguchi.

📅 Thursday, 21 May 2026
⏰ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
📍 De Saram House, 61/6 Ward Pl, Colombo 07
🎟️ Admission is free with prior registration

👐🏼 This event is supported by the Graham Foundation and is part of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust’s 'On Gardens' series. It follows a talk by Isabela Ono on the work of Roberto Burle Marx.
