Happy 45th birthday, Mr B ❤️ 18 years together. Almost half a lifetime of growing up, growing older, building a life and figuring things out along the way. Some of those years have been wonderfully easy, full of laughter, love and adventure. Others have tested us in ways I don’t think either of us could have imagined. Life hasn’t always handed you the easiest cards, and I’ve watched you navigate some pretty tough chapters. But one thing I can say with absolute certainty is how proud I am of the man you are today. At 45, I see someone who has grown, learnt, weathered some storms and come out the other side stronger, wiser and more himself. We’ve lived a lot of life together, and there is still so much more to come. Here’s to 45, to everything that has brought you here, and to all the good things still ahead of you. 💖

“Winning matters. It just doesn’t guarantee anything.” One of my favourite lines from our latest Achieve session. @theachieveclub We had Doug Bird join us to talk to the athletes about personal brand, sponsorship and what actually makes an athlete valuable to a brand. And Doug has a pretty unique perspective on it. He has sat on both sides of the table: first as an athlete himself, and later working at Red Bull, where he was involved in athlete sponsorship. Today he works in this space helping people think about brand and opportunity. What I found interesting was how little of the conversation was actually about social media. It wasn’t about how often you should post or how to beat an algorithm. It was about value. You can be incredibly talented. You can train harder than everyone else. You can win. But a sponsor is still going to ask: Why you? ➡️What do you stand for? ➡️What do people associate with your name? ➡️Can people trust you? ➡️What value can you create beyond your performance? And sitting there, I couldn’t help thinking how applicable this is outside of sport too. We talk about exactly the same thing in business. Being technically brilliant isn’t always enough. ➡️The best accountant doesn’t automatically build the best accounting business. ➡️The best chef doesn’t automatically build the best restaurant. ➡️The best product doesn’t automatically become the market leader. At some point you have to understand the value you create and make sure other people understand it too. Doug showed the athletes a progression I really liked: Attention → Familiarity → Trust → Influence → Opportunity Performance might get you the attention. But everything you build around it determines where that attention eventually takes you. And perhaps that’s the bigger purpose of Achieve for me. We’re not trying to teach young athletes how to become influencers. We’re trying to give them the tools to build something around their talent that can outlast their sporting career. At our latest Achieve Workshop, @doug_bird challenged our athletes to rethink what sponsorship really means and why performance alone isn’t enough. There are thousands of talented athletes. Brands can’t support everyone. So the question becomes: Why you? Your personal brand isn’t your logo. It’s not your Instagram grid. It’s the association people have with your name and the value you create.
