🌻🐐🌻Waverly shares why this is a good bench waiting for the bus @lawrencestreetplaza 🆕 to this account or East Rock / Goatville neighborhood? this triangle plaza was not the safest or most welcoming place just three years ago. There was only 1 bench inside the park. Locals have shared that this was intentional. in 70s this was an area known for drug use and reselling stolen goods. Removing benches and making it a dog park was partly to discourage this use. More recently, we observed that any bench had to be chained up or immovable on Upper State Street. When the city cut down this sycamore, we saw an opportunity to create a bench with this old slab of red oak and a couple salvaged cinder blocks. Red Oak is not the greatest for outdoor use but it has held up pretty well with a sanding and fresh coat of paint every year. 🌻👀🌻Oh, if you’re sad about summer being over, there is one @americanmeadows Henry Wilde sunflower 🌻 blooming now very late to the party!!! Near @eastrockporchfest planters. The lemon queen sunflower 🌻 exceeded expectations in the other empty tree bed. I view wildflowers and annuals as pioneers. When I see fresh soil from curb work with just grass seeds, I just can’t help myself. We may request street trees from @urbanresources but for now, we’re building mini ecosystems and amending soil with salvaged plants, seeds, and random bags of compost and coffee grounds from @sprucecoffeenhv Very💰low cost ✅ DIY and almost never watered except to get them to germinate. We are considering adding another bench on State and Edwards bus stop with @ct_urbanists @maria3sforward9 @carolinetanbee @tara_gian_ @rishabh.mittal7 @susan.h.frew.7 @downtowndoug @corsairapartments @ralphwalkericerink @dougcoffin Wanna get involved? We need to practice the count down this year! @tara_gian_ #urbangardening #welcomet

🚃 Do you know why this is a triangle park and such a strange 5 way intersection where State Street meets East Street, Mechanic and Lawrence? It was a 🚃 turnaround. 🌻🐐🌻HUGE THANKS 😊 to this amazing crew of Goatville neighbors who showed up to tidy and weed the triangle park (aka Women’s Park, veterans memorial, dog park @lawrencestreetplaza 🪏We removed all the dirt from the edges of the historic fence, weeded the curb strips and bump outs, moved furniture from SIDELOT at 1010 State... Right before we put up the barriers, a white Mazda wheeled around Lawrence at peeled out entering our neighborhood at high speed. Must have been going 50 by the time he passed mechanic. A nice reminder of why we’re doing this. #welcometogoatville #urbangardening #eastrocknewhaven @eastrockporchfest leaders @modernrefugeband @grainsofsam and Vin shoveling dirt and showing up. @newhavenflea rallying to shut it down. @tara_gian_ our calm and cool leader. Thank you @susan.h.frew.7 for hosting the permit again this year! @downtowndoug for all your support. @carolinetanbee Ward 9 Alder for initiating this effort 3 years ago. @rishabh.mittal7 next up, pokadots and painting! @dougcoffin check out the colors of your hydrangeas donation!! Just like any garden, it gets a little easier to tidy and care for with each passing season. See you Sept 19 for Porchfest. Link 🔗 in bio to join email blast for future work days when we will be hanging lights and building stages. Doug saves the day! He came in a few days ago asking if we sold bookends because it was a family member’s holiday request, and we explained that the good ones can be expensive for us to acquire because the good ones are heavy annnnnd… shipping! We added that we needed some ourselves, and we recommended thrifting or DIY. Today, he showed up with ones he made for us. 🥹 I mean, to be in community is truly to be blessed. If you’ve ever pulled a book off our shelves and other books toppled over, relief is imminent, and you have Doug to thank. Such a beautiful reminder, at this time of year, that the best gifts are not the ones we buy; they’re the ones we make… 🌈📚❤️ #possiblefutures #bookjoy #collectivecare #community #love

Poetrщry collects the thoughts and memories that might have been lost; the old lady on the third floor walk up in Astoria; the best bowl of lentil soup you ever had; the time you learned why they were laughing at you. It’s all in books, preserved for the right time, when you open it up and read.

Come hear us all on December 9th at 7pm @v0lume_tw0 in New Haven. Get your own copy in the bio.

P O R C H F E S T 2 0 2 5 🌻 dozens of volunteers came together to clean up this little triangle park and our slice of upper state street to “set the stage” for the first annual @eastrockporchfest Seeing the @lawrencestreetplaza and local businesses full of people, dogs, strollers, bikes and skateboards on Saturday was magical. Lawrence, Foster, Nash were essentially closed to traffic, too. Next year, we’re going to close that tiny stretch of Mechanic in front of Mezcal. I hope people carry the spirit of the day forward and get to know their neighbors better all year long. Goatville is very transient with over 70% rental properties. Whether you’re here for 2 weeks or 20 yrs, there are ways to give back and improve our streets and parks for everyone. This park was a dark and sketchy area 2 yrs ago. Saturday it was full of joy, music, smiles and sunflowers 🌻 The plaza is available for pop up events! Visit link in bio to submit your ideas. There are also murmurs of activating the new red stage (with salvaged iron railing from Livingston Street) at 1010 State next to HanMi more regularly with @newhavenflea. This whole endeavor was made possible by neighbors coming together and local businesses like @mactivitynh @inboxhealth and engaged landlords @corsairapartments FREW MGMT, NHV PARKING AUTHORITY (thank you!) sponsoring the improvements. Stay tuned for future projects! We want to add sails shades and hang more lights. Maybe a Halloween 🎃 party?! I ♥️ EAST 🤘 @studio_trip_ you are brilliant! Thank you for hustling to finish the stage pieces by iPhone flashlights Friday night! @modernrefugeband #eastrocknewhaven #urbangardening #pollinators #welcometogoatville #guerrillagardening #rewilding @ianbiggsmusic #community

Sunrise stump yoga at Mechanic Dog Park. Come help us plant more trees 🌳 TUESDAYS IN JULY 5:30-7:30! We need 3 ppl per tree. Pls use Link to Sign Up Genius in bio at the Goatville Food Forest and/or just come visit this instant habitat we’re creating for urban wildlife - primarily gophers and birds; 🐦 eventually, there will be more shade and little trails for people and dogs! 🌳 🐐 ☘️ In the late 1880s, the residential area of New Haven, CT from State Street to Orange St between Edwards Street and East Rock Park was dubbed “Goatville” because many of the Irish immigrants kept goats, which, not knowing much about deeds and property lines, tended to wander around the neighborhood. Used by outsiders, the nickname carried a contemptuous tone at first, but the neighborhood soon adopted it as a term of affection and pride ☘️ 🐐

If you’re new here, I specialize in designing pollinator friendly habitats in Southern CT. Link in bio to make an appointment for urban gardening consulting services #killyourlawn
