Guided By Voices
Guided By Voices is an American rock band formed in Dayton, Ohio. Robert Pollard has been the central songwriter and creative force behind the group throughout its long career. The band became particularly known for its early home-recorded, lo-fi sound and highly melodic songwriting. Their music draws from indie rock, power pop, punk, psychedelic rock, and classic pop influences. Guided By Voices became an important part of the American indie-rock scene and helped contribute to the college-rock explosion of the 1990s. The group has remained exceptionally prolific, continuing to release new albums and perform live decades after its formation.

Lifeguards - Product Head 7” single //
Released 5th October 2010 (Serious Business Records/ Ernest Jenning Record Co.) //

This is the only Lifeguards single to be released. It was produced by Travis Harrison along with Doug Gillard and is taken from their second album, Waving At The Astronauts.

The A-side features the song Product Head (co-written by Doug Gillard and Bob Pollard) while the B-side is a non-album instrumental (written/played by Doug) which the release notes described as, “A hard-driving Gillard power-pop instrumental with a mysterious Pollard vocal contribution.”

If you’re not familiar with Lifeguards - it was a project which involved Doug Gillard writing and recording music (playing all instruments), then Robert Pollard adding lyrics and melodies. A very similar process to how they collaborated on Speak Kindly Of Your Volunteer Fire Department from 1999.

If you don’t have a copy of the single, the non-album B-side is a little hard to find, but you might be able to track it down on YouTube if you haven’t heard it.

When I posted this single previously, @douggillard added some info about the release, saying:
“Naught Windsor was written as an homage to Soft Boys members and originally had lyrics like, “Andy Metcalfe... (something)“- 2nd verse: “Morris Windsor”, then decided it should just be an instrumental in the style of early Soft Boys, failing obviously.
A-side has stuff inspired by “Atrocity Exhibition” & I guess Wire sounds with the guitar stabs. I had fun on a Realistic Concertmate synth that Travis had there for some white noise.“

Also, @anam3_nyc added a cool piece of info on Doug’s instrumental B-side by saying:
“Naught Windsor was used in the opening scene of an episode of J.J. Abrams’ show Undercovers in 2010.
Unfortunately, NBC killed the show before all 13 episodes aired... the episode with Naught Windsor did air, but the series was cancelled a few weeks after.”

Gem - Hexed //
Related 26th September 1995 (Restless Records) //

Gem was a band put together by Doug Gillard who also included future GbV member Tim Tobias. Hexed was the first of two studio albums from the band.

Trouser Press magazine said:
“Guitarist Doug Gillard, Prisonshake drummer Scott Pickering and Four Coyotes guitarist Tim Tobias lead Gem, a group whose primary qualification for membership seems to be past involvement in My Dad Is Dead.
Hexed is a tuneful rush of smart, catchy and simple rhythm guitar pop-rock — sort of grown-up Weezer without the anxious pretensions. Although contributions from the others aren’t as crafty, main songwriter Gillard comes across with the woolly and weird chant of Sheep, the bracing T. Rex borrowings of Your Heroes Hate You and the countryfied pun of Only A Loan.”

This album of smart, sharp power-pop definitely deserves to be listened to and loved on its own merits and not solely as a GbV-related outlier. Just listen to Suburban Girl and tell me that shouldn’t have been a giant mid-90s hit.

Guided By Voices - The Pipe Dreams Of Instant Prince Whippet 12” EP //
Released 17th September 2002 (Fading Captain
Series) //

It’s often mentioned that GbV’s b-sides are rarely just throwaway tunes. Plenty of bands could only dream of writing songs half as good. They’re the kind of songs that deserve to be part of a more prominent release.
This release goes some way to putting things right, The Pipe Dreams Of Instant Price Whippet collects all the b-sides to the singles from Universal Truths And Cycles (plus another two unreleased songs) and sequences them all on a 12” disc.

It could easily be classed as a mini-album, having ten short songs, but its official status seems to be EP.

Universal Truths And Cycles could’ve been a very different album if some of these songs were selected over the ones that ended up on the album but, as things are, we have this excellent collection of songs to add to GbV’s EP omnibus.

Vinyl - White.
1000 Pressed.
