45 HOURS TO GO: JASON QUIGLEY

@photojq really needs no introduction, but if you haven’t encountered the iconic photographer’s work, please go to his page and check out the years and YEARS of unforgettable live music shots, album art, and beyond.

This was a fun little deep dive into the concept for the album cover! I’ve long been obsessed with @marthagrahamdance Martha Graham not only influenced the cover, but partially inspired the first song “Minotaur” with her work “Errand Into the Maze”.

4 DAYS: JASNAM DAYA SINGH

@jasnamdaya is a Latin Grammy-nominated composer and pianist, and literally one of the kindest people you will ever meet.

His playing on Side A of Shadow Work is absolutely stunning and I am so proud to have his talent and heart on this record.

DOUGLAS IS DOPE

Let’s continue the journey through the adorable geniuses and made Shadow Work possible!

Douglas asked me to compose for the Peripatetic Piano series that sparked this project. He later arranged Side A of Shadow Work for PJCE. After that he encouraged me to get a grant to record. I’m endlessly grateful for his support and guidance!

Please check out the Renaissance artist that is @douglasdetrick

Shadow Work is so close to reaching our budget goal… check out the kickstarter link in my bio if you would like to support this community of musicians.

Also you can listen to Shadow Work now! Out on @portlandjazzcomposers records!

In 2021, PJCE commissioned Rebecca Sanborn to perform original songs for our Peripatetic Piano series featuring Portland pianists in various city parks. This song, "In the Dark," sparked Montavilla Jazz to invite Sanborn to write a body of songs for the festival which she performed with a trio in 2021. They, in turn, have evolved into the body of work being released on Friday, September 4th at Alberta Rose Theatre as part of the opening night of Montavilla Jazz Festival 2026.

If the raw power of "In the Dark" is any indicator, you are not prepared for what you will hear next Friday with more than 20 musicians on stage.

PJCE is thrilled to partner with powerhouse vocalist and songwriter Rebecca Sanborn (Blue Cranes, Loch Lomond, Swansea) to present her expansive album Shadow Work at the Opening Night of Montavilla Jazz Festival 2026!

These late-night compositions have been shepherded over several years to an arresting collection of introspection, integration, and becoming whole. With all-star arrangers Douglas Detrick, Kyleen King, Randy Porter, Andrew Oliver, and Joe Cunningham and the full compliment of the 12-piece PJCE, this is a concert not to be missed!

See you Friday, September 4th at 7:30 PM at the Alberta Rose Theatre for the show!

Two shows today at Racine Correctional! These guys have a 20 year old nationally recognized Shakespeare Behind Bars program. Performing for them was like performing for mentors, beloved teachers and respected elders. One man who’d just finished playing Lear wrote us a beautiful poem of gratitude on the spot. Game recognizes game

Every time we perform in a prison facility, we make a point of taking a picture at the gate. We’re trying to bring the outside in with us, and our hearts are full with the grace of everyone inside who walk out with us in spirit.

I've never released a single before. Douglas Detrick, Mieke Bruggeman, and I got together in Douglas's basement a while ago and fooled around with an old traditional Irish song. I'm certain you'll like it. Link in bio. It'll be on all of the streaming platforms very soon but we are doing Bandcamp only for the release.
