POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

“What cost?” 2024 - 5.5 x 8.5 in.
This is the second relief print I created during my residency with Small Works (@smallworksdetroit) I wanted to carve a phrase into wood that I continually found myself whispering in anguish as an aside but also have exclaimed with clenched fists in frustration as punctuation in fervent conversation.

I created a fun challenge for my second go at a woodcut and for sure learned a hard lesson when I sliced through the base of my thumb. It’s all good, I healed fine, it was worth it in the end I guess.
Also notice the cool gradient, that was fun. I’ll share photos of the process one day.
In the meantime, this is an edition of 30 - they are available in my shop right now.

“Overgrown” 2024 - 7.5 x 8.25 in.
At the end of last year, I had the pleasure of being an artist in residence at Small Works (@smallworksdetroit) During which time, my focus was on relief printing (woodcut) and getting acquainted with the Challenge 15MP Proofing Press.

This print is from my first woodcut carving on handmade paper. (Cool)
Followed by some in-progress film photos. (Tight)

The first, me super focused with the wood carving tool in hand.
The second, my moody looking work station. With a quarter of the block carved, a pair of glasses and carving implements strewn around the block.

There are only 10 available and they are in my shop now.
Link in ye ole bio.

Back in June, I created a travel information hotline for my solo exhibition INTERMEDIUM.

Viewers who opted to dial the number posted on the wall (313)241-4005 were greeted with an audio companion for the exhibition they were wandering through @umstamps

Here’s a snippet of that phone call.

Hey now!

It’s that time of year when I sit in front of the fireplace and take the time to quietly read everyone’s anonymous responses submitted during my little deconstructed film exhibitions.

Thank you to everyone who’s participated in the interactive parts of my shows over the years. I hope you’ve gotten as much from it as I’ve gotten from having the opportunity to share my stories.
🖤🫶🏾
Ok, that’s it. Bye.

Midnight Care Collective Presents: HANDLE WITH CARE 💒💝🫂

Handle With Care is a three-part experimental series of community activations centered around the intuitive resilience of Detroiters and the role communal care plays in our collective resistance. Through the lenses of Abolition, Transformative Justice, and Community Care, the series provides an accessible platform for participants to delve into fundamental human needs that shape our survival and the collective practices we hold to persist in our freedom struggles. Handle with Care will encourage Detroiters to rediscover and nurture their internal compass for accessing joy, mutual perseverance, and dreaming within the carceral landscape by making space for the knowledge within. This event series is the fruit of a long year of research through saylem m. celeste’s (@sabetyeee) residency at the Detroit Justice Center (@detroitjusticecenter) and the pilot project of the resulting Transformative Justice/Black Feminist group, Midnight Care Collective (@midnightcarecollective).

Handle With Care is a place of respite, play, and possibility. Our offerings within this series are intended to provide a softened lens in relation to social justice movement work, communal relationships, and healing beyond constricting ways of being. We explicitly stand to reject what removes us from our care and denies us an “impossible” future, past, and now.

With this work, we prioritize Black Women and femmes, Detroiters, People impacted by the -isms of industrial complexes (prison, medical, non-profit, etc.), people craving rest/connection, misrepresented identities, and folks interested in sustainable justice movement work.

The first event of the series, Shelter, takes place on 7.22.23 from 4pm-7pm and will feature @thewhoophouse @asharderstories @daayvicious @breeintransit @venusloc @flower.press @paperstreet.pressco within an ephemeral installation garden space. Poster design by the lovely @artproblems__ !

The link to RSVP is in our bio! We are so excited to finally meet y’all and be in community together. 💐

Dragon in Chains is a multimedia interpretation of self portraiture through the exploration of interior and intimate spaces by artist, AM Scout. The Artist extends the Self beyond her physical body; as bedroom landscapes, as girly dollar store paraphernalia, and through nostalgic flashes of memory captured through film. Within each of these spaces and selves, she prods at the tension between vulnerability and voyeurism that is created by inviting a viewer in.
•
Image Descriptions:
1. Book cover image of a chain drawn in a circle. With the words “Dragon In Chains” in the center. And Allison Scout Waite, written underneath.

2. A zoomed in image of a collage page featuring a pair of hands with playing cards, an orchid and a dogs snarling muzzle.

3. A zoomed in version of an illustration of a person with brown hair and eyes on fire.

Hello, love birds! There is still a little time to propose a session (or an emerging idea) for Accessing Queer Sanctuary Through Print Media and Digital Realms, an Allied Media Conference track that @cyrah_power and @bakpakdurden of @paperstreet.pressco have invited us to co-dream on.

This track aims to bring together and uplift the artists and care workers whose practice inspires joy and pleasure, promotes safety and wellness, offers release and accountability; as we believe these are essential to further our personal and collective liberation. We invite Queer, Trans, Non-Binary, Femme, Masc, Two-Spirit and Gender Variant makers, curators, publishers and printers to join us as we explore our capacity to cultivate sanctuary through our craft and our care.

For more information, or to submit a proposal or a little green shoot of an idea, tap the link in our bio. ✿
