Ah, Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Country Fest in 2000 was a good time. Lots of funnel cakes, endless Miller Lite and the finest rednecks north of the Mason-Dixon. My gf’s parents lived in Rhinelander, and I grew to enjoy their “Up Nort’” vibe and the legend of the Hodag.

What’s a Hodag? It’s a hoax. It’s a made-up creature with green fur, the head of a frog, horns, and spikes along its back and mostly ate white bulldogs. It was made up by local land surveyor Eugene Shepherd, who finally admitted it was a hoax when he learned scientists from the Smithsonian were coming to investigate.

Anyway, Country Fest was fun. I even got to see Waylon Jennings perform, who came out in a wheelchair. Neal McCoy, however, sucked.

And among all the vendors, a hilarious misspelling at a jewelry booth. I didn’t take this pic to make fun of northern Wisconsinites, but for the benefit of @dr.fegg . He was unimpressed, as always.

If you’re north of Wausau, head to Rhinelander. Fine town, historical hoaxes and cheap beer.

These pics of Ben dressed in his totalitarian best are from one of the countless other times he dressed up as an East German army extra. He’s breaking stuff at Badger Liquor and getting “kicked out” by Rick during the winter of ‘98. Why are we pantomiming drunken behavior? I’ll field this question.

A terrible knockoff of the Onion ran as an insert in the student newspaper the Badger Herald. It was called El Diablo. Part of the reason it wasn’t funny was our fault. We wrote (and shot these pictures) for an article about a 18-hour bender we took.

I think we were having lunch at Tutto Pasta and I had a rare afternoon beer. One of us suggested we just keep drinking and write a story about it. So we did.

For no coherently comedic reason, Ben dressed up in his military finest while I had band practice. We then drank until bar time and tried to find more “supplies” at my old apartment, the so-called “House of Slurf” with John Erwood. We didn’t score anything and eventually got tired and went home. Then we wrote a terrible half-true story about our “epic” night. Ben edited most of my stuff out since he knew how to use a computer and I didn’t. That’s another story.

What a piece of fucking shit. Boy, do I miss him sometimes.

It’s hard to pinpoint when this pic was taken of Ben and Jeremy. Mostly because it was common for Ben to dress up in East German army uniform. Happened all the time.

Jeremy might be able to shed light on the occasion.

Guess it’s time to use hashtags. Gah.
